As she opens her door, Fern begins smiling at her greetings. “Sylvii thank goodness I found you at home. I’m sorry I missed you this morning while
walking Milos. He gets so much out of our walks together and with exercising daily our veterinarian tells us. Thanks for letting me drop by,” Fern said, who living in their same suburb
and enjoying walking her dog, one middle-aged terrier, most mornings. Fern keeps in touch with Sylvii each week and days when Sylvii requires some help with transportation or shopping. Leading Fern through her entranceway to her living room, Fern joins Sylvii on her navy blue and peach flowery sofa where Sylvii spends most days resting. After her auto crash weeks ago while driving to church Sylvii plans her days with
her telephone nearby, or watching television and reading her favorite books about gardening and autobiographies of anyone famous. Her convalescence progresses from hospital, to bed rest, and now walking with crutches. Getting out for walks or driving her car again seems like months away from her current situation. Now with her husband’s, Wallace’s, business trip to California extending into many weeks, Fern helps with shopping or driving to doctor or therapy appointments in her new situation for recovery from her automobile accident and resulting serious physical injuries.
“Sylvii, let me make us some tea and I’ll put on your tea kettle. I bought some danishes from bakery at our corner mall,” Fern said.
“Oh Fern, you make me tearful with your kindnesses. I miss our friend, Carole, so much this time. We manage to remain in touch by telephone when Carole travels to Nebraska for property Alain dreams of, and now traveling to France, I fail to see how we continue to find solutions to Carole’s dilemmas?” Sylvii said. Sylvii holds onto papers in her hand and puts them on her lap as she rests her crutches nearby. She talks to Fern putting on her tea kettle in her own kitchen from her post on her comfy sofa mentioning her letter from Wallace.
“Maybe Wallace’s news seems easier to understand if we read Wallace’s letter together, Fern? I miss Carole so much this time. She left for Olde Homestead before, and I manage, but now going to France? ” Sylvii said.
They hear Sylvii’s whistling kettle boiling, and gift to Sylvii, Wallace bought in local Kmart in case she forgets she puts her kettle on to boil. His thoughtfulness keeps Sylvii optimistic about most things that come up good or bad. Ever since her injuries, Sylvii recovers with motivations for daily walks, regimes of self care, and physiotherapy to secure optimism and positive checkpoints instead to avoid descending into one dependant and depressing state of recovery seeming very long.
“I’m missing successes with planning and opening bookstore in White Pines, California and combining talents with Wallace’s business finesse. Maybe I am being too hard on Wallace,” Sylvii said.
Fern brings in Sylvii’s china teapot with two teacups putting silver tray down on Sylvii’s coffee table. Aromas of lemon chamomile wafting into Sylvii’s awareness, Fern begins to relax. Sylvii picks up her letter from Wallace, and begins to read to Fern as their tea steeps in her bright red and pink flowery teapot.
“I found some of your teacups from Sylvii’s Bookstore Witting Lake....where you took Carole after Alain passes away and all Carole’s trouble at her bank came up? I like these mugs” Fern said.
“Yes, Fern. Carole loved our day at Witting Lake. Wallace travels to Witting Lake to work on our bookstore’s inventory out there at our store about forty-five minutes from Gerome…. at Witting Lake. We sat in sunshine and ate lunch together. Carole laughed and said she finally feels normal again.”
Although in past Carole taught English in Thailand, now she told us since Alain passes away and alone, she toys with thoughts of returning to some sort of work again, or even traveling north to tour around in Canada. Wallace in his way shows very thoughtful efforts towards Carole and to include Carole in table-talk with asking about her plans; he understands Carole misses Alain alot. I’ll read Wallace’s letter out loud, and see what you think Fern? Jacob joins us for lunch that day at Witting Lake, and he travels with Wallace as they work out some details on our renewable lease at our Syvlii’s Bookstore Witting Lake location near resort golf course. Jacob manages leases for other businesses too but seems to be retiring a bit so went with Wallace to California,” Sylvii said.

“Dearest Sylvii August 1997
Our objectives for opening our Sylvii’s Bookstore White Pines in California look complete, Sylvii, and our bookstore opens. I imagine you continue getting well in recovery as your car accident seems like one tragic scene out of some horror drama we encounter only in movies. My work here and travel with my old good friend, Jacob, from Gerome goes well. We met up with our old friend from college in Missouri, Hawkins, and both men join me for
gratifying excellent times in White Pines, California beyond my imagination to play golf together with Jacob and I for few times on wonderful golf greens of California.
Although I work most days alone with opening new location of bookstore here in White Pines, each of these men help with details like local state and city offices for business licenses and registering our business name, or even great find of five year leasable location for our third Sylvii’s Bookstore White Pines, and hiring staff and manager to remain open seven days each week from eight in morning until five or nine in evening on Thursdays.
Expanding our business into California creates newness.... I wish you were with me. California weather feels like my holiday and wonderful and relaxing and decide to stay on with Jacob and Hawkins here bit longer. I hope to be back in Gerome by early November.
