Andrea refused further involvement with this man. She straightened, shoring up her own display of quiet confidence. Her voice dropped to the same low octave, adversarial but cunning. “McCormick, it’s been real, chatting with both you … and your toxic masculinity … but I don’t have time to waste on either one of you.” She swiveled on her booted heels. McCormick’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction as she walked away, rattled. People made mistakes when they got agitated. In pure devilment, he growled, “Have a good day … Mrs. Fitzgerald,” deliberately accentuating her title. “It’s been bitchin’.” A hairball of lividness caught in Andrea’s throat. Her eyes blurred, but her boots continued the long, humiliating squish across the marble floor. She thought, if Hell were conquerable, McCormick would be the agent of evil to do it! He watched the door swing shut behind her, chuffed that she hadn’t switched off the lights. From out of the back room, the aged Postmaster suddenly appeared, snapped his suspenders in place and leaned over the counter, chortling, “McCormick … you sure as hell have a way with women.” “Yup,” he yawped, pulling her key from the lock, “I’ve had a lot of practice.”

About the Author
Author and poet Mary Hitchcock George grew up on a dairy farm in the Midwest. The author of Coalbucket Christmas, Mary lives in scenic Brown County, Indiana, where she’s recently retired from education and journalism. She is married with two sons, and is Grandmary to three grandchildren.
