About the Book

I see The Dakota Nimrod Grows Older as a sequel to my 2017 book, A Dakota Rod and Nimrod. The title is borrowed from Robert Ruark, one of my favorite writers. His classic, The Old Man and the Boy, was followed by The Old Man’s Boy Grows Older. In this sequel, I tell a few stories that I feel need to be told. These include Dr. Bill Delaney’s classic Africa hunt as well as the final flight of DC-6 #14436. In looking over almost 2500 columns, I tried to choose stories that contained a human element, hopefully more than the “I went there and I shot this” of my first book. I have also included some hunts by friends that I felt were particularly interesting. The title, The Dakota Nimrod Grows Older, is a reflection of my age. I’m in the “early winter” of my years. Most people my age quit hunting and fishing years ago. For reasons I don’t understand, I’m as excited on today’s opening day as I was when I was a twelve-year-old making my first cast in Canadian waters for a monster northern pike.

About the Author

Born in 1942 and raised on the south side of Chicago, Roger enrolled at South Dakota State University in the fall of 1960 and graduated in the spring of 1964. In 1970 he received his Masters at SDSU. Roger spent forty years in teaching, coaching, and serving as a high school principal in South Dakota public schools. He married Elizabeth “Betsy” Hodgson in 1965, a union that brought daughters Laurie, Lisa, and LuAnn. A passionate hunter/fisherman, he began writing his weekly outdoor column, “Rog’s Rod & Nimrod,” in the early 70’s. He continues to write both the columns and magazine articles today. His previous books published by AuthorHouse include A Dakota Rod and Nimrod and Southside Boy. Hunting and fishing have brought both Betsy and Roger to far corners of the world.
