Biblical Judges presided over the affairs of the Israelites. Judges were individuals who served roles as military leaders in times of crisis. They were chosen by God to rescue the people from their enemies, establish justice, and solve legal issues among the people. It was during the interval between the death of Joshua and the accession of the first King, Saul. God established them before the Israelite monarchy. The Book of Judges focuses on the Israelites idolatry, failures, and God abiding mercy. Throughout the Book of Judges, there is a cycle of rest, relapse, ruin, repentance, restoration, deliverance, and peace for God’s chosen people; the Israelites. The Book of Judges mentions 12 individuals who judged Israel, which were Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, Deborah, Gideon, Tola, Jair, Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon, Abdon, and Samson. Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, Jephthah, and Samson are known as the 6 significant judges out of the 12 judges.
