VIETNAM Of all my friends – veterans many Who came home unsung in ‘69 and ‘70 For decades they spoke not a word A generation of baby killers was truly absurd Vietnam wasn’t their choice – they were just kids Volunteer or drafted - in country and points on a grid When their time was done they put it out of mind By that conflict they would not be defined No celebrations and no welcome home Some settled down while others still roam Did you serve – no thanks for your service Blending into the world staying quietly nervous Then wasn’t the time to ask them their stories The other side of the world in hell and no glories Only mom and dad were happy when they came back Back in America they were under attack It wasn’t until the Gulf war - 30 years hence Their sacrifice and effort made any sense Celebrated as old men whose youth was unsung Can finally tell of the days when they were young It’s never too late for thanks and welcome home Cherish the outreach and look for those who roam They remain the one percent who answered the call Bent by a rucksack in high grass they crawl A new generation of kids who over the years Answered the call and returned to our cheers We’ll remember Vietnam and the brave ones who served And what we did to them will remain underserved
