The house had stood alone for many years in quiet neglect. Now something was different; something strange and really weird was happening with the old house. At first Karen sensed it more than seeing or hearing it. She jumped back with a sudden start! Gone was the boredom she had felt earlier. She no longer noticed or cared about the hot sun relentlessly beating on her flushed face. All she felt now was her heart beating and pounding wildly within her chest. The door to the old house stood wide open. Someone, or rather something, was slowly walking out! Karen heard what sounded like the sudden whinny of a horse followed by the thunder of hoof beats as whatever it was raced from the inner darkness of the old ramshackle and took off like a bolt of lightning to the far side of the fenced in no-man's land. In a flash it cleared the five foot fence to the east, and went streaking off between rows of half-grown corn, up over a hill, and out of sight! Karen gasped in utter amazement. She rubbed her eyes, wondering if the shimmering heat had caused her to imagine what she had just seen. She pinched herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. She had just seen the most powerful and dazzling white horse she had ever laid eyes upon. High on the powerful steed's forehead, displayed like some proud medieval knight's spear, Karen had seen the horn of a unicorn!

About the Book
Even though her dad told her there is no such thing as a mythical unicorn, there is nothing that eleven-year-old Karen loves more. Is it any wonder that when she believes she has seen one, she embarks on the adventure of a lifetime? Karen is a determined young girl dead set on proving her dad wrong. She follows the mythical creature’s tracks through a neighbor’s cornfield up to the edge of a large forest. A pack of wild dogs frighten her into dashing into the woods for her own safety, but the action causes her to get hopelessly lost. Hungry, scratched, and bruised, Karen eventually finds a clear spring-fed pond where she refreshes herself. Once again, she spies the elusive creature, and her real adventure begins.
About the Author
Ever since his grade school days, Moses Hochstetler (aka Grandpa Moses) has loved to write. In the mid 1990’s Moses graduated from the West Redding School of Children’s Literature. Over the years he wrote numerous poems, and by the late 1900’s many of them had been published in anthologies, magazines, and newspapers. Early in his writing career Moses laid out, designed, and had a local print shop produce 6 of his own booklets containing many of his early poems, and he designed many of his own greeting cards and flyers to share with friends. In 2008 Moses published a book on his family history and genealogy. In 2009 he wrote a book of poems and essays in Recollections Of An Amish Childhood. He followed that up In 2010 with his collection of Poems To Cheer the Heart. Finally, in 2013, Moses put together a collection of inspirational poems and lyrics in Sacred Celebrations. Karen and the Unicorn is Moses’ first fictional children’s storybook. It was first written for his daughter Karen in 1985. Later it was submitted to numerous publishers, all of which turned it down. Knowing that all those who had read the story thoroughly enjoyed it, Moses never gave up on publishing it. After he convinced Karen’s daughter Ashley (Moses’ grand-daughter) to illustrate the book, he finally decided to self-publish it through AuthorHouse. One of the author’s favorite genre is writing for children. A number of Moses’ poems would lend themselves toward excellent books for young children. Moses plans on having several illustrated and published in the near future.
