Later that night, Ana was awakened by several noises that sounded like someone sneezing in her closet. It sounded muffled, since the closet door was shut. It wasn’t a normal sneeze, and to Ana it sounded like “nalapazoo.” She quickly rubbed her eyes, and when she was about to look in the direction from which the sound was originating, a very bright light shot through the window and temporarily blinded her. She quickly put her hands to her face to shield her eyes from the blinding light. It had been fairly warm that evening, and her window was half-open, so when she heard the sound of wings flapping, her first thought was that a bat had flown into her room. Paralyzed with fear and her eyes still covered, she realized she was unable to scream to her father, who, by this time, was passed out on the couch. She slowly peeked with her right eye in the direction of her window, which was on her right side by the bed and saw what appeared to be a black crow flying out her window. The bright light had disappeared. Quickly she covered her eyes again. She began to breathe very hard, and her heart rate quickly increased. She was scared to death. Just when she was on the verge of tears, she heard the sneeze again. Nalapazooooo….” This time her curiosity got the best of her, and she slowly withdrew her hands to see what was causing the sneezing. When she opened her eyes, her jaw dropped and a sigh escaped her mouth.

About the Author
Troy Patoine grew up in New Hampshire and is a graduate of Keene State College. He is the author of Red Moon, a finalist for science fiction book of the year for both ForeWord Magazine and USA Book News. He lives in New Hampshire with his fiancée, Teressa, and their Australian Shepherds, Trixie and Copper. His son, Tristram, lives at home when not at College. In this, his second novel, Troy tells the story of a girl who wandered off the path that Fate had in store for her and tries to get back on track with the help of a mysterious girl. The author is always working on a new novel.
