About the Book

For any family anticipating a move with a cat, Gus's tale will reassure parent and child alike that everything, despite some uncomfortable changes, will be all right in the end. In coming to live with his new mom, Gus soon filled her world with his big personality and penchant for adventure and creative napping. He had grown up in a small town in Pennsylvania and moved to metropolitan Washington, DC. But would he be ready for a 2,500-mile drive across the country to a new home in a place that couldn't be more different than the eastern forest he knew so well? Gus learns to walk on a leash, ride in the car, explore new places, and adapt to a new life. Told in his own words, Gus’s laments and enthusiasm for life will ring true with children of all ages.

About the Author

A third generation Arizonan whose pioneering family is part of the state's history, Christine Flanagan retired from public service in 2012 and returned to the desert after living for twenty-seven years in the Washington, DC, area. Her childhood included adventures on the family gold mining claim, barrel racing in junior rodeos, and road trips through the wilds of Arizona with her grandmother, who instilled in her a fierce independence and deep appreciation for the value of public land. In addition to the usual childhood pets, she befriended horned lizards, spadefoot toads, and other denizens of the desert. Her life has been shaped by many deep relationships with cats beginning at age 6 with a white Persian named Sugar. Moberak, a stray tuxedo kitten entered her life in 1975 followed in 1986 by Ezmerelda, a pregnant barncat who soon presented her with a litter that included the mischievous Trouble. Gus took over her life in 2011.
