About the Author

Germa Amare lives his life as a scholar, educator and philosopher. He believes that every human should be given a chance at the good life – for him the key to that good life for the African is a philosophy of education that enables creativity, discovery, wonder, and respect for one’s tradition and roots. Amare, who has a PhD from Southern Illinois University, USA, has taught at Addis Ababa University, the University of Zambia, Makerere University in Uganda and the University of Lagos in Nigeria. He held various academic leadership positions at the University of Lagos. He was one of a group of African intellectuals who wanted to modernize Ethiopia and its traditional educational system. After the revolution broke out in 1974 and he had to leave Ethiopia, he found other ways to realize his dreams.
