Amy Richards is a no-nonsense author who is bored with her life and her stagnant long-term relationship. She has a near obsessive compulsion for the Beatles and music. She constantly makes connections in her life to music. Amy has come to NYC for the first time on a business trip armed with her wits and her iPod.
Following her fist nationally televised interview, she retreats to her dressing room where she is approached by a well-known actor by the name of Adam Cam who is seeking her autograph. She later bumps into him again at the hotel bar where they share a table. Amy and Adam make a strong connection and enjoy each other's company. He makes her laugh. But when Adam and Amy end up alone in her room later that night, she struggles with being swept up in a moment of passion. She manages to weakly shield her desires from the advances of a handsome and famous man.
Adam offers to show Amy the sites of the City but they spend most of their time just enjoying each other's company and conversation. He teases her about her musical preferences yet does have a shared love of The Beatles. She struggles not to make comparisons between the good natured and humorous man she has just met, and the lack luster man she has known for nearly twenty years; her husband Erik. As she develops feelings for Adam, an internal conflict arises manifesting itself into wild dreams. As this struggle ensues between a second chance and the life she has grown to know she is plagued by a bizarre nightmare: In her dream, she witnesses a bigfoot tearing apart a fox only to find herself lost in Industrial Japan with a silent man as her only human connection.
Adam reveals that he has a home in the town of Bridgeport where Amy is scheduled for her next appearance and he insists on taking her there. He continues with his comical and crazy shenanigans upon their arrival but things now are getting serious. She is finding herself spending more time laughing and enjoying his company than thinking about her family obligations back home. Amy throws back up her defenses when Adam approaches her about certain aspects of the novel she autographed which he believes to be true regarding a former abusive relationship. They argue and she is reluctant to reveal any information about her past despite her comfort with him. Adam continues to probe into the personal details of Amy’s life as he himself has fallen for her. He constantly makes advances and sexual innuendos and she is flirtatious in return. He extends considerations on her behalf, which is something that no one has done for her in a long time, and she enjoys the flattery.
Adam plans a romantic beach luncheon for them and they continue to get to know one another. They are playful together and share similar ideas. Their banter is witty and entertaining to each other. As a person who is constantly seeking solace in songs, Amy is impressed to learn that Adam is a gifted guitar player. A posh party is held at Adam’s Bridgeport home where he dedicates a song to Amy and plays beautifully on the piano. She is so moved by his expressions of kindness and love toward her that she feels she must leave right away. Amy knows that if she stays another night in Adam’s house she will give in to her desires. Adam pleads with Amy not to leave prior to and at the airport. He wants her to take a risk in her life and stay there with him after only knowing each other in four days time. She boards the plane and returns to the life of stagnant monotony that she has known for so long. Once Amy is back home, she is paralyzed by her emotions. Unable to complete the most mundane tasks, unable to think of anything else but a man that she has hardly known! She selects music as her comfort to soothe her feelings for Adam.
Amy is again plagued by a nightmare. This time where she is attacked by bears and cannot get any help. No one can hear her speak, she is stuck in a world of silence reminiscent of the silence that she endures in her own relationship with her spouse Erik to whom she was never legally married. She seeks the wisdom of her sister throughout her journey and finally confides with her sister where she stayed and what she had done while in NYC with Adam and later Bridgeport. Her sister prods her to come to Seattle to visit her and get her mind off of the situation. Amy agrees. When Amy arrives at the airport, she purchases her ticket for JFK instead of SeaTac. She has to go back to Adam. Amy realizes that the solace of her sister will not compensate for the feelings of passion, longing and the opportunity for a second chance that she sees with Adam.
Upon arriving at Bridgeport Amy finds Adam on the beach. He sings a song for her, which carries great meaning and finally says those three little words to her that he has been skirting around. She confesses her love for him. He proposes by recapping on a joke from earlier in the book.
