The Clerk

The clerk stood before the court and announced that the verdict was guilty.

“It’s a lie,” the defendant yelled from the table where he stood.

“Order in the court,” the judge shouted, smacking his gavel up on the bench. “Order in the court,” he repeated.

The crowd settled down, and the defendant remained standing. He stared at the judge. “I didn’t do this,” he said, still staring at the judge. “What are you going to do, send me to jail for contempt of court, when you just found me guilty of a murder I didn’t commit?”

Just then a shot rang out, and the defendant fell forward on the defense table. He didn’t see the commotion that ensued behind him.
