Antonio learned his shell can be helpful too, when he was out playing one day. He tried to balance on a log near a pond, when he heard an ugly sound. “GRRR! GRRR!” It was the biggest, furriest, most horrible black bear he had ever seen. It started to rumble straight towards him! “Flying spotted cats!” he screamed. His brothers and sisters from the other side of the pond yelled, “Run away Antonio! Run away!” Antonio trembled with fear. He stayed in his shell and did not want to even breathe. The big scary beast heard Antonio’s scream. He came closer and pawed at the ground for a moment. He was angry and snorted at the wind, “BOOF! BOOF! BOOF!” Confused, he turned one last time to look around. That hairy animal finally gave up and ran off into the woods. It was now safe so Antonio and his brothers and sisters gathered together. They were very thankful and still a bit frightened. Then they ran home to tell Papa and Momma everything. Antonio aprendió que su concha puede ser útil también, cuando estaba fuera jugango un día. El se esforzó balancearse sobre un tronco al lado de un estanque, cuando oyó un sonido feo. “GRRR! GRRR!” Era el más grande, más peludo, más horrible, oso negro que Antonio había visto. ¡Empezó a correr pesadamente hacia Antonio! “¡Gatos pintos voladores!” gritó Antonio. Sus hermanos y hermanas desde el otro lado del estanque gritaron, “¡Huye Antonio! ¡Huye!” El tembló de miedo. Se quedó escondido en su concha sin querer aun respirar. La gran bestia espantosa oyó el grito de Antonio. Él se acercó y con una pata rascó el suelo por un momento. Él estaba enojado y bufó al viento, “BUF! BUF! BUF!” Confundido, el volteó por última vez para mirar alrededor. Ese animal peludo por fin se rindió y corrió hacia el bosque. Ahora estaba seguro y Antonio y sus hermanos y hermanas se reunieron. Estaban muy agradecidos y todavía un poco asustados. Ellos entonces corrieron a casa para contarles todo a Papá y Mamá.

About the Author
Javier Rene Solis was born and raised in Edinburg, Texas. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an aspiring musical artist. He had the privilege of being a Physical Education teacher at the elementary level for 8 years. He is the fourth of five children and all of them happen to be educators as well. His parents, Jose and Estella, along with several generations of ancestors have lived exclusively in Texas. He is proud to be an American of Mexican descent, and to also be from the Magical Rio Grande Valley of deep south Texas, which is located just minutes from the international border to Mexico. He has been quoted with the following: "To be Hispanic and live here in the Rio Grande Valley we get to experience the best of both cultures. At times It seems that we do not belong to either one, but we are also not entirely alienated from either one. What has formed is what we proudly know today as TEX-MEX ! It's all our own thing!"
