The story concerns a blue spaceship, which is approaching earth. On the Spaceship, there are nine people, all human beings (Team Nine), who look exactly like ordinary human beings. In fact, they are human beings. They have come from a Planet, called Kepler-22 (an actual planet). Kepler-22 is a planet, which has the same exact environment as the earth. Everyone who dies on earth is instantaneously reborn on that planet. Currently, there are about 170 billion individuals on Kepler-22, that is exactly the number of people who have ever lived on earth. Planet Kepler-22 is 36 times larger than earth but because of its temperate climate, humans thrive there. These humans on Kepler-22 are perfectly healthy, free of all diseases, and are 1,000,000 times more intelligent than when they were on earth. The problem is because of the rate of population growth on earth, Kepler-22 is quickly filling up. They need to occupy Earth for this purpose!
In order to do this, Team Nine brainstorms and finally decides that because of all the beings on earth (humans, animals, insects, viruses, etc.), the best and most effective way is to DE-SEX everyone, including all animals, insects, even bacteria. This process takes 10 seconds to do, and once it is done, no one will ever reproduce. This would be the end of the life of the current beings on earth. Of course, as everyone dies (only beings, who possess a soul), they are reborn on Kepler-22, and the current ones are sent back to earth to live here. So, in effect, we will all die and then come back to life, living on the same planet but this time as perfect humans!
The main protagonists on earth are a woman (Scarlet) and a man (Brandon), two dogs, two roosters, and two bees.
As Scottie, an eccentric man on the spaceship (who looks like Stephen Hawking with a Freudian beard), explains: “this would be painless,” but will forever take away “attraction,” which he considers as the Achilles' heel, the cause for the downfall of humans. He then delves into the causes of “attraction” and “sex” as well as the process of aging .Everyone will then die without having any more children and will be immediately reborn on Kepler-22 without any diseases or the like.
Once the Earth is desexed, the people's attitudes towards each other is pleasantly and permanently changed: Old women interact and socialize with much younger males without any strings attached, and vice versa. Everyone interacts with everyone without any regard for their appearance.
Scarlet, a beautiful young woman, with her boyfriend/husband suddenly finds herself in the midst of this desexed world. On the first day, she struggles to put on her make up, but she finally decides not to. She finds that other women, too, have not put on any make up. She somehow, feels free and liberated. She talks with everybody and anybody. She befriends a homeless man and even takes him out to lunch and have a heart-to-heart conversation.
The two Roosters, who live on two neighboring farms, and who used to have a cockfight ritual every morning, suddenly find themselves living a peaceful life side by side of each other. The dogs live a lavish life with their master. Once they are desexed, they too, are much more friendly in a benign way. The bees are the happiest, especially, the male bee, because now that he is desexed, he no longer will die simply due to a single mating!
In Team Nine, there is a young man, named Jacob. Jacob is 25 years old. All children, who die on earth, no matter what age, come back to life as healthy 25-year olds. They are the same children (with age progression) who have turned 25. There are no children on Kepler-22. Jacob was previously a 9-year old boy, who died of leukemia back in 2010. He revisits his life on earth before his death.
Scarlet, the young woman on earth (who is still alive) briefly meets her parallel twin and they both reminisce and revisit her mother's death, who had died of breast cancer 5 years earlier. As she finds out, her mother is alive and well on Kepler-22.
At the end, all forms of life perish and some of the occupants of Kepler-22 (in fact, the same people, who recently lived on earth) re- occupy Earth. This time, free of all diseases, inhibitions , hang-ups, and the like, while they now have a collective conscience and collective knowledge of the world.
