The Candle Still Flickers... in My Heart

The harsh winter days moved along fine, except some silent voice in my head whispered to that there would be a fire. Shortly later, my mind showed me big flames and screaming children. I believed it was a warning from our island witch Ola to get ready to save the infants. I practiced rescuing my infants placing a big, strong blanket into the crib near my cot and placed all four tiny infants inside of it. Then I covered them up with a warm blanket, tied the ends of the first blanket together and lifted the babies out of the crib. I surprised myself by being able to lift the heavy bundle and carry it out of the door. That did not solve my intuitions, instead they became stronger. The next morning, I told Norma, the day nurse, my feelings. She listened very carefully, sat down and said, “Oh child, what a burden to carry, do you know when the fire will start?” I shook my head. “Are you prepared to safe these little ones in case the fire starts here?” she asked. I nodded my head and told her what I had practiced. After I fed and cleaned the precious little ones, I placed them in the crib near me again. While a mad winter storm brewed outside, shaking the barracks slightly, I tried to concentrate on my school work. Suddenly I heard a loud explosion. The electricity went out and my school papers let me see red, licking flames. In a hurry, I flipped the flames of my lap, picked up the orphans and ran toward the door…
