Kaye stood against the white board fence looking across the acreage that belonged to her grandparents. The Mason farm was a good place where much of the history of the family had taken place. It was a quiet place, nice to come to for some soul searching. Kaye had come here to try and find her roots, to get her feet back on the ground. This was proving to be a rather hard thing to do. Her life was not turning out to be as carefully planned as she had worked so hard to have it to be. Especially after she was thrown from Tom Scott's horse. She was riding the horse from her grandparents' home through the bottomland back to Tom's barn. Tom looked up to see his horse come running into the barn lot with saddle and bridle, but no rider. He grabbed the reins, jumped on the horse, and rode back in the direction from which the horse had come. Kaye was laying on her back with her head and shoulders raised off the ground supporting the upper half of her body on her elbows. She was seeing stars and her stomach felt as though it were floating away like a helium filled balloon. Her head fell back against the ground. Suddenly Tom was over her, feeling her wrist for a pulse. She was jolted with humiliation and began to sit up. "I thought you could ride a horse. You've nearly scared the living crap out of me!" His voice was angry and his face was drawn in lines of frustration. "Is your horse all right?" "Yes!" "Good! Then I will walk back home." "What?" Tom knew if she did, his contract with her grandfather would be in jeopardy and he needed the money he would get from renting the Mason farm in order to keep his farm running. "I am going to walk home! It's bad enough to be sitting here on my rear end in the middle of nowhere, but it's worst to have someone screaming at me about it," and with that Kaye got up and started to walk away. Tom stood stone still in exasperation for a moment. He gritted his teeth and decided what he would do. He walked up fast behind her, picked her up, turned and walked back to his horse. Before she could protest, he said, "Shut up! Now you listen to me. You're only here for a week and I'll be damned if you walk back over to your grandfather's and get him mad at me, and ruin my whole summer of income. I need those crops, and I'm gonna drive you home in my truck. If I have to make you, I will." He put her on his horse, swung up behind her and rode back to his house trying to think of a way to get himself out of this situation with the least amount of damage.

About the Book
Kaye Mason thought she had her future very carefully planned. She was graduating with a teaching certification, and was engaged to a promising young law student. Everything seemed so perfectly in place. Her family, as always, was right there behind her supporting her one-hundred percent. She finds out just how much she needs that support when her life doesn't proceed as beautifully as she had it planned.
About the Author
Linda is a retired educator who spent thirty years helping children develop their writing skills. After retiring, she decided to take her turn at developing her own writing skills. Digging up a manuscript that she started writing over forty years ago and refining it, proved to be more of a challenge than she could have anticipated. This manuscript, titled: Shared Years and Linda have shared a lot of years together. In addition to writing, Linda enjoys riding horses, and a variety of art related activities including theatre, painting, and music. She lives on a small farm in Kentucky with three cats, five horses, and her husband, J. E. She and J. E. have had a lot of fun restoring and driving Model A Fords. Linda is a collector of vintage clothing from the Model A Era 1929-1931, and she and J. E. often dress in period costume while driving their Model As.
