About the Book
The purpose of this guide is to provide organ procurement coordinators with the information needed to pass the Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) exam and as a handbook for coordinators to grow their knowledge in the transplant field. Hospital development, brain and circulatory death, consent, donor management, organ sharing, and intraoperative topics are discussed using UNOS policies, current research, and/or experiential knowledge. Providing families with a legacy for their loved one on arguably the worst day of their lives is often considered the most precious reward for this emotionally-draining position. The coordinator is compassionate, caring, and willing to comfort a family wrought with grief. The coordinator understands that donation provides healing for a family and their goal is provide a silver-lining to families who are living a nightmare. Organ procurement coordinators are responsible for bridging organs from donor to recipient. To accomplish this, a broad set of skills including hospital development, requesting consent, donor management, organ sharing/allocation, organ recovery, and organ packaging/labeling processes are required. The coordinator is excellent at multi-tasking, organizing, communicating, and doesn’t mind a day full of surprises. The best organ procurement coordinators juggle these tasks with a smile.
About the Author
Brooke Hubbard, BSN, CCRN, TNCC, CPTC graduated nursing school in Denver, Colorado, and began a year-long LPN career in an Alzheimer’s unit and as an agency nurse in many Colorado hospitals. Upon graduating the RN program, she began nursing in the neuro/surgical and medical intensive care units of a busy trauma hospital in San Diego, California. In this role, she provided care to many organ donors and became passionate about the process of donation by witnessing the healing it brought to donor families. She started working for Lifesharing, the OPO of San Diego, and obtained her BSN degree, as well as TNCC, CCRN, and CPTC certifications. She also worked as an adjunct clinical instructor for nursing students in San Diego. She now enjoys working for Donor Network of Arizona as an Organ Recovery Coordinator.
