Big and I were at the hospital a lot usually because either a victim or suspect were wounded and we would need to question them. We both made friends with most of the nurses there but there, was one in particular named Erin who made it pretty clear that she was interested in me. I mean, Big used to tease me about it a lot, it got around the station, and everyone would mess with me about it. Erin was very nice, although it didn't seem to matter to her that I was married. She gave me her number, and I took it, fairly sure that I would never have to use it until one night. Carol and I got into a huge fight; it was so bad I put my fist through the dining room wall. She kicked me out, and I drove around, then wound up in a bar. I had a couple of drinks, and then I called her. I called Erin. She met me out at the bar, and the rest was history. But afterwards I felt terribly guilty. I went back to Carol a couple of days later, but things just got worse so I left, and that's pretty much it."
Alexa didn't really know what to say next, even though she had initiated the conversation. Her mouth then took over, not exactly receiving permission from her brain, and she asked, "Do you still love her?"
Jax looked in her eyes when she asked him that. He wanted to be as honest as he could with Alexa, so he said, squeezing her hand tighter now, " Doc, I will probably always love Carol because she's the mother of my son and she's a good mother, but I'm in no way in love with her. It's just like when she called the other day, she actually accused me of ditching my son so that I could spend time with my ‘new girlfriend,’ you. It really made me angry, and I felt like I hated her at that moment. But when I begin to feel that way I think of Nicky, and I then I feel like I owe her an explanation, you know."
"No, I don't exactly know because I've never been married or had a child, but I'm definitely trying to understand. So far, marriage doesn't sound like what it's all cracked up to be."
"No Doc, don't say that. It's just sometimes we make mistakes even in our choices of spouses. But don't go thinking marriage is bad because when you’re with the right person, it's a wonderful thing."
"So then, how do you know when you’re with the right person?"
"I would say it’s just a feeling. I never got that feeling with Carol; I mean, she was fun and beautiful and once we married I fell in love with her, but it was never really love at first sight or anything."
"So if you never got that feeling with Carol, how do you know what that feeling is?"
Jax felt like this was getting deep, and he was going to have to do a lot more explaining if they continued the conversation, so he said, 'Because I believe in love at first sight." He hoped she didn't ask if he’d ever experienced it because he didn't want to admit that he had, with her. Alexa didn't ask if he'd ever fallen in love at first sight, partly because she was scared of his answer and partly because she believed in it too, at least ever since she met Jax.
" I think it's probably that time," Alexa said, looking at her watch.
Jax replied, "Oh baby, I know it's that time," giving her a very inviting smile.

Both a little tipsy they swayed onto the elevator, neither wanting to call it a night, so when the door closed and the elevator went downward, he pushed her against the wall, trapping her with his body. "God, I want to be inside you right now," he said in an urgent voice and then frantically kissed her lips, then her neck. "So what's stopping you?" she said indulging herself with him. When he heard those words he came apart, hitting the button on the elevator; it jolted as it came to a stop. Gritting his teeth he lifted her skirt up pulling her underwear down and letting her kick them off. His hands moved back up over her bottom as he pressed himself harder against her. She struggled trying to free him when she unzipped his pants. But when she did she stroked him, boldly. "Do you want that?" he asked while she was gripping him, moving her hand up and down over his erection. All she could do was breathe the word “yes.” She found herself swiftly being wrapped around Jax again. Right there, against the wall in the elevator where he had her pinned, he entered inside her. Inch by inch she took him slowly in. It was Jax who lost control, though. His heart was pounding and he became frantic. Working them both into frenzy, he pounded himself into her wildly. She cried, he moaned, and when they came it was quick and hard.

As they slept, he lay pressed close against her body. They cuddled in a spoon position, never wanting to let go of each other through the night. From time to time Jax would wake in the night, finding her still cradled against him. Each time he'd wake he thought how great it felt being so close to a woman you loved. Yes, loved. There, he finally admitted it to himself. He had completely and utterly fallen in love with Alexa. He wondered how it happened so quick and how she felt about him. He wondered if she’d asked him about his marriage to see how he was as husband material. Then he thought she’d think he wasn’t a very good one for cheating. He laid there, hoping that what he told her tonight wouldn’t change the way she felt, if in fact she loved him too.
They woke up early and got ready, both anxious to get to Fairwinds, but first they would have to look their part. They went to a mall, and Alexa took charge of finding a department store where they could purchase the clothes they needed for their upcoming charade. First they looked for her outfit in the women’s department. She jumped around from rack to rack, trying to find the perfect thing. Jax called her over to him and showed her a turquoise micro fiber shirt that was on a mannequin. The shirt swaged around the neck, making a “v” right where her cleavage would be. She liked it, so she found the rack it was on, grabbed a pair of black slacks she thought would look nice with the shirt, then proceeded to the dressing room. When she walked out to show Jax, he stood from his chair and said, "My God, you look absolutely stunning." Alexa looked down at the ground as if she were being modest. He noticed how beautiful the color looked with her hair and the cleavage, well, that was impossible not to notice. He also liked the way the pants hugged her slim body in all the right places. "Ding, Ding, Ding, I think we found a winner. If our doctor is a man he will be talking up a storm at the sight of you, " he said.
It was his turn now, and Alexa picked out a black double-breasted suit with a burgundy dress shirt. When Jax came out of the dressing room, he threw up his hands as a gesture to ask if this were it. When Alexa didn't say anything, he asked, "Well, what do you think?" She studied him, walking around him in a complete circle, nearly scrutinizing every hem. When she stopped directly in front of him, he said, "Well?" She shot him a sexy smile and said, "Well, if our doctor is female she may want to give you more than just information on Shiply."
"Oh well, the things I must sacrifice for my job," Jax replied, lazily.
Alexa rolled her eyes again, giving Jax a slightly crooked smile. When they went to check out, they asked the clerk if they could wear their purchases out of the store. He gave them a bit of a funny look and said, “sure.”
