It slowly started to get dark so Ness and I stopped and took a quick break. We were supposed to walk back through the woods and find our way back to the small town we left a few days before.
The walk so far hadn’t been bad, Ness kept going on about school and her brothers (one older and two younger). But for the past half a mile or so, she and I had been quiet, it was kind of creepy not hearing her speak for longer than sixty seconds.
“Hey, Dylan?” Ness was looking very concerned as she sat down on a small bolder.
“Yeah?”
“What…” She stammered a bit as she said the word, “What if we can’t?”
“What do you mean?” Ness always knows what to do, if anyone is way over confident, it’s her. Why would she ask me if she couldn’t do something?
“I mean, what if we don’t get there on time, or like Alex said, what if one of us gets hurt? Then what do we do?” I stared at her in disbelief.
“That won’t happen,” I looked into her eyes.
“You don’t know that. Anything can happen. Last time, we had an army. This time, we have a boy who grew up in a castle,” by the time she said “castle” her voice was so quiet that I had to strain to hear it. That’s when the impossible happened, Vanessa Mottz started to cry.
“I do know that. We will be alright,” I took her hand in mine, wiping away a small drop of water as it fell. “We will be okay. If we weren’t going to be able to do this, we wouldn’t have been chosen.”
“How can you be sure?”
“Ness, trust me.” That would have been the perfect time to kiss her, but I heard footsteps approaching from a few miles away. If we stayed, they would overtake us in fifteen minutes. Snapping my head up, I jumped to my feet.
“What’s wrong?” She stood up next to me, not hearing the sounds that my highly advanced, super powered ears could, and started looking around.
“Someone is coming, we have to move,” I grabbed her hand and started running deeper into the forest.
“Who is it?”
“I don’t know, but if I had to guess, they’re probably not very friendly,” I turned my head and gave her a reassuring smile. Why is it that we are always running for our lives?

About the Author
At 14 and 16 years old, Natalie and Melissa Black are avid readers who collaborated to create a thrilling story about four teenagers who embark on an adventure out of this realm. When the two sisters are not writing, you can find them on the soccer field, studying, or working on their Gold Awards in Girl Scouts. They attend school in Katy, Texas and want to thank their family and God for all of their support and help throughout this experience.
