I remember walking slowly through the park, capturing every little detail, I wasn’t going to see this again. I had made my decision, no turning back now. I had to pay the price. I looked around to see children running, birds flying high in the sky and girls sitting on the benches gossiping away. In the horizon I could see Carew Tower; I was going to miss Cincinnati. I was going to miss the Smale Riverfront Park – the beautiful coloured lights at night making the water look magical. And of course the Cincinnati Bengals who were my father’s favourite football team, he had all their merchandise. I remember the last game I went to with him was against the Miami Dolphins, it was such a memorable game. I miss father. Walking a turtles pace I made it back to my house. I sat next to mother and gave her a tight hug, a single tear trickled down my face. Mother gave me a hug and walked away; she couldn’t bear to see what was going to happen. She was going to be lonely from now on, father had died from cancer and my brother and sister, Natalia and Eric were married and gone, they only came to visit once in a blue moon. I got up and knocked on mother’s door and went in, I sat next to her, rested my head on her shoulder and told her they weren’t coming till tomorrow night she felt relieved that I was with her another day. Why couldn’t she understand why they were going to take me away? Thoughts begun to fill my head, shall I tell mother the truth or should I leave it? Were they ever going to let me free or were they going to keep me forever? Questions after questions entered my head, this was too much. I lifted my head to see that mother had drifted off to sleep but I could tell she wasn’t sleeping a peaceful sleep it was filled with anxiety and anger - anger because she was helpless; she couldn’t do anything to save me from my fate. No one could. I did what I had to and had to suffer the consequences of my actions. I got up slowly and went to the kitchen to get two tablets of pain killers to calm down my raging headache. I heard the wind howling outside making the branches of the old oak tree wave ferociously giving me a chill down my spine. This was a sign, they were coming. A sudden fume filled my body I was going to tell mother the whole story regardless of how she took it. I had tried many times before to tell mother how all this began and how it would end but she wouldn’t hear it. My sister and brother were no help at all even if I told any of them they wouldn’t believe what I had to say, they thought all this wealth came by its self, they had no idea. Only mother knew what was going to happen, she believed me. When I was a little girl I would have never expected that something like this would happen to ME. But then again no one knows what the future holds.
I was walking towards mother’s bedroom to wake her up and tell her exactly how this had happened. I had to. I stood in front of the door, hesitated then finally wound up the courage to turn the door knob and then I walked towards her. I held her arms and bought her up into a sitting position and shook her gently. Mother opened her eyes and rubbed them she saw my face and squeezed me, guessing by her expression she probably had a dream about losing me. I sat next to her and said that I was going to tell her how this all happened whether she liked or not. To my surprise she didn’t get up and leave like she would normally have done, she just gave a simple sigh. I started to talk then she stood up and walked away from me . Great!
“I’m going to the bathroom Giuliana.” She said in a whisper
“Ok mother.” I didn’t want to argue with her and let her go.
She walked into the bathroom and whilst she was in there I was going down memory lane to remember everything and tell mother, it was now or never. She came out in 5 minutes which was quicker than I expected.
“Are you ready mother, I really need to tell you, please?”
“Do I have a choice Giuliana?” she said closing her eyes and resting her head on the headboard of her bed. I didn’t reply to the question and began to explain.
