A few weeks later, Nonna, Grandpa and Amelie drove to Indian Island where Wabanaki tribes were celebrating their culture. Amelie saw a large, hand-made drum in the middle of a field with Native American men sitting around it dressed in beautifully beaded clothing. They were beating the drum in rhythm and chanting strange sounds. "What are they saying?" Amelie asked Nonna. "They are telling stories about their tribe." Just then, the Native American women and children started dancing and swirling in a circle to the beat of the drum. Amelie could sense how proud they were and wished she could dance just like them. A small Indian girl motioned to Amelie to come and join them. Did she want her to dance? Amelie jumped up and followed their movements feeling fancy-free. This was so different from her ballet class in New York City.

Amelie is a typical third grade girl living in New York City and rooted in the urban culture of skyscrapers, traffic and commercialism. When confronted with her visit to Grandma's home in rural Maine, she begins to recognize and witness the beauty and simplicity of living close to nature. As her visit continues through her summer vacation, she comes to the realization that different environments have unique and valuable qualities.
About the Author
Lisa Poisson received her Bachelor of Science in Special Education from the University of Maryland. She was a teacher of elementary and special needs children for forty years. One of her main ambitions was to encourage her students' imaginations through expressive writing. Her inspiration for this book came from interactions with children and the pristine, natural environment of Maine. She treasures the years raising her son and daughter, enjoys the time spent in New York and Maine with her granddaughters, and has fond memories of her many students. Ms. Poisson and her husband are both retired and live in Blue Hill, Maine with their four cats. This is her first book.
