“Lord, “Lord, please don’t let me die today,” I begged, my back against the church door.
I was twenty-two years old, just out of college. Maybe it was the guilt of the life I led that was affecting me. Maybe it was the rising shame of not making church more important. Maybe I was too ashamed because of the lateness of the hour. I just could not go in.
I also knew that if I died at that moment, I would open my eyes in hell. At that thought, I was mortified. There had been Sundays I had not even gone to church, but never had my mortality gripped me so tangibly as it did then. What was tormenting my soul?
The next Sunday I was in church – on time. When the pastor called for sinners, I was at the front. It was as if some invisible friend took me by the hand and led me. The pastor called for more lost souls. No one else came. At that moment, I was not concerned about anyone but myself. I just knew that I needed to be there, even if it meant standing alone.
That moment would take me on a twenty-year journey to discover what that moment was all about. My life wasn’t just about salvation; it wasn’t even about the patience of God who waited twenty years so that—to some degree—I could understand his purpose for my life.
Twenty-years after that moment, my former pastor told the congregation, “God has spoken purpose over your lives. And that word He has spoken is out there, reverberating in time and eternity, waiting for you to get to the place where you can receive it.” At that moment, every vision of the past crystallized. My life was all about the words God had spoken over me.
And it was all about being a vessel for his use.
Have you ever asked, “God, what is my purpose? Why did you call me? What am I here for?”
I have. We all have.
Well, the purpose he has for my life is your purpose as well. How he uses us as vessels to bring it forth might be different, but the result is the same. He has called us to reveal his glory, to strengthen our brothers, and to make worshippers for him. If we have not done at least one of those, we have missed our purpose, but know that he has called us to do all three.
After reading this book, maybe you will have clearer direction, maybe your life can produce more fruit, but definitely you will be encouraged to yield your entire vessel to him. And what is so beautiful is that as you set your mind to walking in his design for your life, you will walk right into your destiny! What a blessing it is to know that God still uses vessels to bring forth his purposes!
Let’s start our journey together into his purpose…and the best place to start is at “The Potter’s House.”
Do you remember that moment? My wonderful God made that moment special for me so that he would use me to make similar moments special to others just like me.
Let’s go.
