“You’ve been here for two years?” Miranda gasped. All of the numbness had been replaced by surprise. Two whole years! In this place! Miranda shuddered. “Yes.” Short and sweet. And totally unhelpful! “Why?” Miranda demanded in a harder tone than she intended. Caden looked away, his blue eyes going out of focus as he settled into story-teller mode. “Miranda, there’re two kinds of perfects in here. One kind is like you; bred through this facility. Your parents, I’m guessing, are what we call ‘Dedicated’ - kids that grew up in here and became loyal to all the Facility stands for. “The other kind is like me. Random. ‘Wild specimens’ I guess you could call us.” Caden chuckled once in a dark, mirthless tone. “We’re random but we’re also very rare. The Facility keeps an eye out for us; and they found me. They didn’t take me from my parents; and my folks didn’t give me up like yours did to you. Instead, I had a shitty home life and took off when I was sixteen. I was picked up by the Facility workers not a mile from my house. I’ve been here ever since.” Miranda chewed this over, thinking of all that he had just told her. His story was sad. Him running away only to end up here. But Miranda really didn’t know Caden well enough to care. Maybe that’s why he told her now - before they grew on one another. But what really stuck with Mira was what he’d called her parents. Dedicated. “Tell me about those who are Dedicated,” Miranda said, fiddling with the sleeve of her shirt before looking up to meet his eyes. Caden sighed and looked away again.

About the Author
Writing from the age of ten, Leah Alvord was raised with a love for the written word. After graduating from a Distance Learning program at the age of fifteen, writing became her sole purpose. Growing up in the wilds of beautiful Northern Michigan, she was never wanting for ideas and inspiration. Now at the age of nineteen, Leah still lives in the same small town where she first began writing, along with her mother, brother, and four dogs.
