As the deputy drove his 1962 Ford in front of the school parking in the front for all to see his presence he stepped out wearing black jeans, black shirt with a silver star, black boots and a straw hat. His gun was visible for anyone who looked at the deputy, he stood six feet two and must have weighed 245 pounds, he was intimidating to look at. In his jaw was tobacco and his front teeth stained yellow. As the deputy entered the school he went straight to Howard's office, closed the door and told the secretary he was there to see the superintendent. As he entered Howard's private office he took a seat. Howard sat behind his desk and extended his hand for a handshake. After the two settled in the deputy told Howard he was assigned to the case and had just begun his investigation, when Howard asked if he had any news to share the deputy said he was there to interview the seniors and juniors, " I will interview all of them" said the deputy, but "I am interested in the boys, they will be the ones to do a criminal act, the girls might know something though, boys can't keep there mouth shut".. He then told Howard "I want to interview them first as a group, and then I will meet with them individually". Howard smiled, the deputy had a plan and at last he was getting some action. Howard had promised the students he would get to the bottom of the crime and those responsible would pay dearly, Howard then smiled to himself, "they will pay". As the deputy continued to sit in the chair he asked Howard if he had a paper cup, he needed to spit tobacco juice from his mouth. Howard got on the phone and dialed the extension of his secretary. "Bring me a paper cup", then he told the secretary to "Get on the intercom and have the juniors and seniors assemble in the gym, tell them to take a seat on the bleachers and to be there in 10 minutes", "yes sir" said the secretary. As soon as the secretary brought in the cup to the deputy and left the room closing the door behind her, the deputy said, "I am sure someone knows something about the crime, I will be able to unravel this thing when I conduct my interviews, if the guilty doesn't confess someone who knows will spill there guts".

Life in 1967 was simple in small town America until the local bank is robbed and one teenager was able to identify a potential suspect. While searching for the thieves the local basketball team was on a roll winning games and was a serious contender to win the conference championship. One teenager named Porter is pursued by the bank robbers who intend to do away with him as a potential witness and a couple of local teenagers are on his trail to make sure he does not date there girlfriends. The ending is a thriller and everything up to that point has Porter considering whether he can survive.
About the Author
In 1967 I was a teenager in Glencoe, Oklahoma, population four hundred twenty. That same year there was a bank robbery in which I was able to provide to FBI agents a description of one suspicious person, who became a prime suspect in the robbery. While this was a major event for the small town, life continued to go forward, with sports being the main topic of conversation. Around that same year, the high school was vandalized, and all the high school students became suspects. As an athlete I enjoyed the opportunity to participate in both baseball and basketball and enjoy the fruits of victory while learning valuable lessons through losses. After high school I attended Oklahoma State University and majored in Sociology. Upon graduation I became involved in state government, primarily working with juvenile delinquents, children of abuse and neglect, and persons afflicted with mental illness. I have lived in Oklahoma City since 1993 and am married to Linda Stecker Smith. I have two biological children, Kimberly Porter-Russell and Keri Lynn Porter-Warmuth as well as two stepchildren, Adam Smith and Allison Smith. Life has been good!
