‘Bastard’, Bremman snarled, then whipped out a cruel vengeance-gun and shot him. Lord Crooker’s environment-bubble exploded, and the icy vacuum of space leapt in to instantly destroy whatever was left of its contents. Desperate and too-late sniper-shots hailed down upon the Colonel and Lazarus from all directions, but personal force-fields protected them as they raced back into their ship. As their sleek craft took off, environment-suited snipers dashed out from their concealments and sent a volley of small-arms fire towards it, but to no avail. Two giant, automatic anti-aircraft devices emerged from the ice below and fired barrages of missiles at the ascending vessel, but it had moved out of reach. Shenaria had reached the Fortress’s gates when she felt the shock of the sudden report of Bremman’s vengeance-gun. She turned in time to see Lord Crooker’s environment-bubble burst apart sickeningly. ‘No!’ she cried, anguished. A part of her wanted to dash back towards him to see if he could be helped, but she knew it would be hopeless. Tears streaming from her eyes, she hurtled through the Fortress gates and ran towards the operations room, tearing her helmet off as she went. An almighty boom was heard, and the floor and walls surrounding her shook. She lost her footing and tumbled to the cold, steel ground, badly injuring her ankle as she did so. She cried out. Before she could get up, a massive crump was heard, popping her eardrums agonisingly. Once more the building shook, and the metal structure made a nauseating high-pitched screaming noise as it was twisted and shaken beyond its capacity to go. Then came a ghastly hissing sound, and the air began to whip past her face, its temperature dropping by the second. Shenaria’s breath suddenly became visible before her. She realised what must have happened. The attacking flotilla had launched missiles at the Sanctification base – colossal, deadly ones. At least one of them had breached the complex’s atmospheric seal. All the warmth and air of the Fortress Dedicata Profundis was being rapidly sucked out into space.
