About the Author

Samy Appadurai is a well respected community leader who had dedicated his life to serving his community through his work as an author, freelance journalist, radio and TV producer and commentator with a style that can be described as engaging as well as entertaining. He is not afraid to speak up and hold a non conventional point of view, even at the risk of being unpopular. Samy Appadurai holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ceylon and his background is indeed diverse. From teaching in Nigeria, being a principal in Ethiopia, former Council Member of Ontario College of Teachers and currently being the Principal at International Ontario International Institute a private school in Toronto, Canada, Samy’s career has taken him on many adventures, some taking place in his home city of Toronto. It is these journeys that led him to run for political office in 2007 as the provincial Conservative Party Candidate for Scarborough Centre. Samy Appadurai truly embodies what it means to be a Canadian. He is the recipient of the Golden Jubilee Medal of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the National Ethnic Press Council and Media Council of Canada and has received many awards for contributions to Canada. He knows the issues that Canada faces both inside and in the greater political world. He speaks in a way that makes you think but he also respects the intelligence and experience of the average person.

" Canada a Nation in Motion

A few weeks ago, I opened my mailbox and noticed the familiar white card informing me that there was a package for me at the post office. I was certainly not expecting any parcels but my curiosity was peaked and I walked to the post office to see what awaited me. I was handed a plain non-descript box and I made my way home.

After getting myself settled in, I made myself some coffee, sat down and opened the package. Inside was a book entitled ?Canada a Nation in Motion? written by Samy Appadurai. I am familiar with the saying ?never judge a book by its cover? however in this case the cover of the book got my attention. The cover shows a group of people, some with cell phones waiting impatiently to board a ship bearing the colours of the Canadian flag. I immediately understood the symbolism behind the image.

I opened the book, started to read and I could not stop. The forward to the book was written by Dr. Andrew Linder and he describes the author Samy Appadurai in very glowing terms. I fully agree with Dr. Linder regarding his ?complaint? in that Mr. Appadurai needs to be more patient with this ?young giant? Canada and that this country does not yet realize its own wonderful blessings.

The opening paragraph to the first chapter of the book is entitled ?Canada?We Complain, the World Compliments? made me laugh for it reminded me of the number of times I too have waited in hospital emergency rooms only to hear the same complaints from other patients. However, in his distinct combination of analysis and common sense, Mr. Appadurai precisely outlines exactly how Canada is viewed by the international community. By the end of the chapter, I felt proud to be a Canadian.

What I also found very intriguing about this book is that even though a variety of subjects are covered, the author links them all in such a way as to make them all relevant to each other and to the book as a
