About the Book

Bob and Mickey’s peaceful retirement on Anna Maria Island, Florida is disrupted when their grandchildren from Indiana spend the summer. While the kids confront young local bullies, their grandparents face senior citizen bullies as their Condo Homeowners’ Association board uses rules and fines to force them to move away from this tropical Paradise. Sabra is a precocious deaf, ten-year old who flirts with college boys and pressures her grandparents to learn American Sign Language. David’s twelve, yearning for teenage independence while still dealing with childish fears. Island boys Bone and Heath just want to make everyone miserable. Reading this book is like living for a summer on the island. Readers will feel the sea breeze, enjoy meeting the AMI Privateers and walk the beach with Turtle Watch volunteers. You’ll spend time at the Community Center and party with families at Deaf Service Center events. Come and enjoy real island locations, take a cruise to Egmont Key, and meet rescued dogs, veterans, cowards, heroes and villains.

About the Author

Donna Harris teaches at the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) in Indianapolis. She taught English to both deaf and hearing high school students and worked as an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. As coordinator of continuing education at ISD, she provided GED, adult basic education, high school credit and enrichment courses. In 1991, President George HW Bush named Harris a Daily Point of Light for creating the nation’s first statewide deaf literacy program. She holds a Master’s Degree from Ball State University and taught ASL and writing courses at the University of South Florida in Sarasota. It was a life-changing moment when Harris discovered the international Accelerated Learning community. She immersed herself in brain research and spent years learning from and working beside innovators in education and corporate training. She is an Accelerated Learning presenter in education and business. Careful readers will find several Accelerated Learning techniques in Ruff Life. Harris and her husband/co-editor, Brian Northam, divide their time between Zionsville, Indiana and Holmes Beach, Florida. They have two adult children and two Shih-Tzu dogs. The couple shares a passion for photography and open-wheel racing. Look for them in the pits at an Indy Car race near you. This novel is a love letter to the people, pets and pirates on Anna Maria Island.
