The mass of gray and green torsos were moving in tighter around the teenagers, even though Yame was swinging furiously. The sword in his hand wasn't hard to maneuver, and as he was learning how to weave it in the air around him. Even with the combination of Kaya's energy (which she was using daintily) and his fiery swings, the army was still closing in tighter, each member more enraged and bloodthirsty. Despite their efforts, Roznoc was still being pummeled by the blades; with each stroke he would let out an icy scream, his head and haunches lifting off the ground until they almost touched. Kaya and Yame were struggling to come to his aid, but with the swarm of soldiers upon them, they were having trouble keeping their own flesh on their bones. Kaya longed to let loose a river of energy, but the sheer amount could harm Yame or Roznoc in the process. The Fire Wheel rested heavily against her ribs, and she gritted her teeth in annoyance. It was too much power, too much responsibility for something she was such a novice in, but complaints wouldn't take it away, she knew. Instead, she glanced around her, looking for something she could do to ease Roznoc's suffering and Yame's battle. Closing her eyes halfway, a small stream of fire leaked from her wrist, and swirled across the ground like a snake. When it was a sufficient distance away, Kaya pushed a little more power out of her, and a circlet of fire erupted around the three fallen beings. The grotesque army members leapt back from the flames, screeching loudly. Yame's burden was eased momentarily as he stood, panting with his sword in both hands, bent over. Roznoc paused, heaving heavily, deep gashes bleeding with dark, sticky liquid. Kaya stood cautiously, ready to leap and unleash, but somehow managing to keep herself still, watching; waiting.

The Two Children must now race to find the Fire Wheel, before Zain and his armies use it for his own destructive purposes. Once again, Kaya and Yame, with their companions, begin a quest to save their land --if the flames don't consume them first.
About the Author
Nicole Warner began writing in kindergarten, and hasn't stopped since. She started the Keeping Kaya series when she was 14, and published Keeping Kaya: Book of Judan when she was a freshman in high school. In addition to writing fiction in-between classes, she enjoys running on the scenic Alaskan trails, playing her Epiphone guitar named Fiona, and writing/playing songs with her band No Substitute. She hopes to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks and earn a degree in Natural Resources and Management or Wildlife Biology.
