Hare planned to get water the following day. He waited until it was almost dark before he hopped down the well. The bell around his neck was ringing but there were no animals around. He reached the edge of the well and stooped. He looked around but there were no animals-not a single creature! 'What's going on here'? he thought.
'I hope they are not hiding in the bushes waiting to ambush'.
He cleared his throat loudly. Nothing happened. He coughed, still nothing happened. He started humming some unintelligible tune, but nothing happened.
'Brilliant.' He said to himself. 'I think I know what has happened. They think they have scared me so much that I would not dare try again. Fools! But I have to be sure.'
"Hallo, hallo, hallo, anyone there?" he called. No response, not even a sound.
"Guard, guard, gua a a r r r d!" he shouted. Nothing happened.
He approached the well looking around slowly until he got to the water.
'Didn't I tell her it was going to be easy?' he murmured.
"Halloo guard. I am going to fetch water now. I am Hare don't you remember? You are supposed to stop me.” he shouted, but it was as quiet.
"That's it!” he said loud.
He filled his pots, bathed and was ready to go when he decided he must have his usual water dance. He jumped in once but could not jump a second time- his foot was stuck. He tried to free it but it was firmly stuck under water. He tried to lift the other foot but that was stuck too!
"What's going on here? This has never happened before" he muttered angrily. He bent over to free his feet with his hands. First the right hand got stuck.
"What's the--."
But before he could finish the sentence his other hand was stuck as well He was bent over now and could not move.
"YIKES!" Hare cried when he saw Tortoise face emerging from under water.
"Where did you come from?" he asked in amazement.
"Halo water thief, surprised?" Tortoise said in a triumph.
"How did you...”
"Manage to catch you?" Tortoise finished the question for him.

About the Book
Hare loved his wife and children and would do anything for them. But when it came for others he was inconsiderate, selfish and uncooperative. When Africa animal kingdom was threatened with draught and hunger, animals pulled together to survive. Hare would not get involved. Eventually the kingdom was enjoying rewards for hard work. Hare did everything possible to enjoy the rewards too. Little did he know that the full fury of other animals would result in the beginning of terrible consequences for the kingdom.
About the Author
Ibrahim Sareva was born in Tanzania and grew up in the north of the country just below mount Kilimanjaro. Encouraged by his father young Ibrahim became interested in story telling and writing. West of Kilimanjaro 1 is a recollection of one of the children stories his father used to tell him. It is animal story book packed with actions, humour and unexpected ending.
