One year ago I was a little grey kitten searching for a house to live in and a special person to feed and care for me. I wandered around a quiet neighborhood and spied a nice looking man who looked like just the person I needed. He was dressed nicely and even his work boots were handsome. And the back door of his house was open! Oh, I thought, run! Into the house I went – fast!
The man suddenly saw me zip by him but because of my color and speed he thought I was a squirrel – imagine that. He decided he couldn’t go to work with a wild squirrel in the house so he started to look for me. It took him a while, but when he peered under his bed and saw two little yellow kitten eyes, he just laughed, reached for me and picked me up in his large hands and petted me. It was love at first sight. I just purred and purred. Life was suddenly wonderful.
The man decided that since I was so cute and well behaved he would set out a bowl of milk for me and let me stay in his house that day until he found out where I had come from. I was quite impatient during the day, waiting for him to come home. Curious, I decided to look around this new place. It was great fun checking everything on the floor in all the rooms. The man had lots of magazines and books. I was still too small to climb or jump very high so I didn’t get into trouble that first day.
When the man returned I saw him turn on something he called a computer; he told me he was making a sign to put up outdoors to tell people in the neighborhood that he had found a little grey kitten. He wanted my family to come for me. He made several copies and put them in store windows and on trees. I heard him tell a friend that he had placed an advertisement in the newspaper saying I had been found. What he didn’t know was that I really didn’t have a family. He didn’t realize I was a little mystery until no one came for me. This left him in a predicament. What should he do with me?

About the Book
Based on the true story of how the son of the author’s friend happened to get his kitten and the sometimes wild antics that followed, this book is a combination of laughter and compassion.
Even when Avery gets into more mischief than Michael thinks possible, Michael always responds with kindness toward his kitten.
About the Author
Nancy Rearick was an elementary school teacher before her children were born. She returned to substitute teaching and later worked at the Connecticut Education Association before retiring. She lives in Connecticut near her family which includes her two grandsons, Brent and Daniel.
Carolyn Emerson has been a life long painter and illustrator. She formulated and taught integrated art curricula in Connecticut and Virginia during her working years. In retirement, she has focused primarily on watercolor painting and private instruction. This is her first children’s book endeavor.
