Alison and Rosie were looking forward to Thanksgiving weekend. They headed down to the Cape on Friday and Rosie told Alison all about the place where she had lived as a child. Rosie had grown up in the town of Chatham. It was a charming and quintessential New England town with an old colonial feel to it. Each building on the main street was painted a blueberry colour with white shutters. There were many individually owned shops and Rosie knew most of the townspeople very well.
A beautiful European style church where she used to go to Sunday school dominated the main street. It was large, painted white and had dainty arches adjoining the church hall. The impressive spiral tower housed the church bell and it rose up into the sky for as far as the eye could see. The pristine white walls stood out like a white marble statue. Rosie told Alison there were many seals and dolphins in the area, and they became stranded on the south beach quite often. There was a dedicated organisation of volunteers who saved them. Rosie explained that Chatham was famous for its lucrative fishing and maritime history and the town was always busy in the spring, summer and the autumn.
‘Rosie, this town is so pretty. I’ve never seen such a lovely place. Mind you, I bet it’s really cold this time of year because you’re by the coast.’
Alison sighed looking out of the window, as they drove towards the famous lighthouse. She couldn’t stop smiling; she’d fallen in love with Chatham with its unusual shops, art galleries and craft stores. The streets were deserted, and she couldn’t wait to wander around without people rushing around her.
The few people who were brave enough to be out in the icy wind waved to Rosie as she drove down the street. She pointed out to Alison who everyone was as she cruised by.
‘Alison - You need to be well wrapped up at this time of year, you can get some pretty nasty storms coming off the ocean. I love it though; the wind makes you feel alive, somehow. The beaches are empty in winter, except for locals and dog owners. I can’t wait for you to meet Jess; she works at the local bookstore. We used to spend hours in there as kids; it has some neat toys too!’
‘I can’t wait’, Alison replied.
She brimmed with happiness, as they drove along towards the lighthouse. Rosie pulled into one of the narrow streets leading straight to the seashore just before it.
