“Captain! Look!” shouted Perrin, pointing to Lydia as she walked toward the raiders.
All gunfire ceased, as every man, on both sides, seemed to see the woman at the same time. She was a vision in yellow, topped by long brown hair blowing wildly in the wind. Her face was obscured by her wet hair. She reached up to brush the strands out of her eyes as she limped forward.
A bushwhacker shouted: “Come over to us, Sweetheart!”
“Got something nice for you,” yelled another one of the attackers.
“Over here!”
“Mine’s better.”
“Come this way!”
As soon as Brinton saw her, he stood up. Dropped his pistol. Raised his hands in the air, high above his head. Marched toward Lydia. No gunfire sounded. All eyes were on the captain walking toward the pretty woman in the wet dress plastered against her slender body.
Not far to go, thought Brinton. Is a bullet going to stop me?
He reached her. He grabbed her. He lifted her in his arms. Ignoring the brief back pain, Brinton raced back to his men.

About the Book
When the Yankee nurse's wagon overturns, she does not expect a captain of Confederate cavalry to rescue her. Unable to reveal her identity to the enemy, Lydia remains silent until Brinton's tender care overcomes her fear. In the final days of the Civil War, Lydia and Brinton strive to serve their causes in East Tennessee and find something more powerful than hatred. The bondage of war gives way to freedom in their love for each other.
About the Author
An avid Civil War scholar, Nikki Schofield has served as president of the Indianapolis Civil War Round Table from 1996-97 and 2008-09. She gives first-person portrayals of Civil War women such as Mrs. Stonewall Jackson, Clara Barton and Lincoln-conspirator Mary Surratt. Nikki has been the Library Director at Bingham McHale LLP since 1974. She also works part-time as the staff genealogist at Crown Hill Cemetery. An ordained deacon, Ms. Schofield is active in Speedway Baptist Church, and serves on the Coordinating Council of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. She has two sons, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Nikki resides in Indianapolis.
