This story is dedicated to all of the heroic men and women who perished during the September 11th. terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Buildings in New York City in 2001. Here is an excerpt from 9/11.
Surely that small plane had just flown off course..
And tipped the Twin Tower... with a sorrowful force!
Leaving behind the smoke and debris
Entrapping the people... whom we could not see.
"My Auntie is in there" spoke a tiny, dark voice
She whispered it low, like not having a choice.
Our eyes hugged each other in total despair
Surely this could not be happening there!
With a small spark of hope, I said, "Oh she'll get out...
The stairways are solid and strong.
The buildings are made to withstand such a blast."
In a moment, my theory proved wrong.
The second plane hit... the inferno did flare
The buildings echoed... in pain and despair.
The people inside them... kept pouring out
In orderly waves... that left me no doubt.
No doubt that this accident was very well planned
The planes were on course... and very well manned.
The inferno, the gray smoke, the blasts and debris...
Left little or no doubt.. that this could not be?
Not in New York! The world's biggest center
My soul felt so small, I could no longer mentor...
The anguish, confused faces who stared up at me
While watching together... that color TV.

Cheryl Kaye was born in Jamaica, New York; and was lucky to be born as an identical twin to Michelle. Along with their younger sister, Paulette, they were raised in Farmingdale, Long Island where houses were few and far between. While playing outside in the salty air with each other, exploring the unknown wooded areas and using their imaginations was a daily activity. They continue to share their love of reading and writing stories or poetry about their adventures and life experiences.
Cheryl graduated from the University of Maryland with a strong interest and desire to teach young people about conserving our Earth's resources, protecting the environment and taking responsibility for "the footprints they leave behind."
She has taught science, literature, environmental education and vocational agriculture to thousands of students over her thirty year career as a teacher. "I cannot imagine doing anything else as important with my life." She wants to remind new teaching professionals that teaching can be a joyful, rewarding and insightful career. Cheryl continues to write poetry, childrens books and inspirational stories, which will be published soon.
