“Spirit, baby.”
“No, Asa. I think I knew it! I knew it!”
Asa is getting upset and corners Spirit in the stairwell. “You knew what?”
“Nothing. I’ve seen all I needed to see. You don’t have to worry about me calling or you having to drive two hours to see me. Lose my address, my number, everything!” Spirit is shouting.
“Spirit, you don’t mean it. Stop trippin’. She doesn’t mean anything. I’m just using her.”
“So, you use people now, Asa? I thought you were better than that. I see college has changed you, and I’m going to move on, too.”
“What are you saying, Spirit?”
Asa stands over her, and Spirit goes silent. She tries not to look at Asa.
“Say something, Spirit. Talk to me, beautiful.” He tries to kiss her. Spirit moves her head away.
“Come to my room with me.”
Tears stream down her face.
“Spear, I didn’t mean for you to find out. I’m sorry. I mean, it’s not what you think. She forced her way in. She was there when I got out of the shower. Say something, beautiful. Don’t give me the silent treatment. Stop crying.” Asa tries to wipe her tears. “We can go to my room and talk it over.”
Asa grabs her hand to lead her back up the stairs. Spirit snatches it away and runs down the stairwell. He runs after her. Spirit is outside and makes it to the car with Asa right behind her.
“You can’t out run me, Spirit. I’m too quick.”
“Let me leave, please. It’s apparent you don’t need me. You have your groupies.”
“No! You’re coming upstairs with me.”
Asa grabs her arm.
“No!”
“If you don’t let me go, I’m going to scream. I’ll make a scene.”
Asa looks around and tries to kiss her again.
The young lady who was in the room walks pass and says, “I’ll see you later, Asa, when you’re free.”
Asa clinches his jaws and tries not to look at her. Spirit gets into the car. Asa hits the window.
“Get out! Get out right now, Spirit!”
Spirit starts the car. Asa goes to the back of the car, so she couldn’t put the car in reverse.
Spirit yells out of the window. “I’m not going to fight with you! Please move.”
“No, not until you talk to me.”
Spirit moves the car a little as if she is going to back up.
“Get out of the way, Asa.”
Asa stands there.
He doesn’t know me, she says to herself. She puts the car in drive and drives over the grass into the street.
