In a sense, we have become homogenized, condensed, dumbed-down and reduced to trying to appear intelligent in an ever evolving ignorant world. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Just imagine primitive man standing vigil with the thick forest at his back. Poised at the water’s edge he gazes upon the vast lake before him, hypnotized by the rhythm of the waves as they break in their ebb and flow upon the shore. There is no spoken language to express his awe. The birds sing in harmony with Mother Nature’s song, and the gentle breezes caress his skin. His body responds instinctively to all that nature provides in silent conversation. He listens for the subtle changes in the sounds of nature to alert him to that which may help or harm the plight of his survival. In an instant he hears the rustle of the trees and reacts to its pronounced voice. The hairs stand up on his arm and before he can blink his eyes, intelligence urges him to flee for shelter. This silent wisdom is the same intelligence that afforded him the ability to survive for hundreds of thousands of years without a language, without a cell phone, an automobile or a million dollar insurance policy.

For centuries man has written about the origin of language. In 1882, an article addressing Comparative Philology, published by J. A. Smith, D.D., an editor of one of Chicago’s leading publications, The Standard, reveals some interesting findings. Simply put, it states that philology (the love of language), can be traced back to a time of primitive communication when man was able to thrive without it. In fact, the language of love versus the love of language likely prevailed. Of course it did not have the same look and feel that love and language have today. It was more pure and honest and addressed all that man needed from nature. He was not nearly as influenced by his peers as he was by his physical surroundings and the unpredictable elements of nature. His focus was primarily directed towards staying warm, fed and alive. His intelligence was most pronounced when addressing the obvious, versus trying to outwit another human vying for his possessions. Like wolves, there existed a mutual respect for survival and like the wolf, man spent his energy wisely. Intelligence is not born of language, but rather intelligence gave birth to language. Maintaining the integrity of this intelligence as we speak is where self-discovery becomes of the utmost importance and where the greatest test of man plays itself out daily, hourly and by the second. We still are striving to recognize ourselves in our own individual states of authenticity, knowing deep down inside that there is a reason why we show up the way we do in this life.
