They lived next door to each other all of their lives. Their parents had moved into their homes before the boys could even remember, so they never remembered a time when the other wasn't there. They were better than brothers, because they never fought like brothers always did. Where you would find one you would always find the other, rain or shine. If there was an ounce of adventure anywhere around they would find it.
Today was no different from most for Bobby, he's determined to find some adventure even if it was going to kill him and Mike. He had been keeping his eye on an old house in town for a longtime and hadn't seen anyone ever coming or going. The grass was tall and the house looked as if no one lived there for some time now. The rumors were a man lived there with his mother, but she had passed away several years ago. All the kids would throw rocks at the house and claim a crazy man lived inside but no one ever saw him. The boys would often see someone deliver groceries to the front door, but they would leave them on the porch and go. No one ever saw who took them, all they knew was they were always gone when morning came. The house had a wrought iron fence around it, giving it the look of an old estate and kept intruders out as well. But that's what made it all seem so adventurous to Bobby, he had to know what was inside the house and he wasn't going to stop until he found a way in.
As they walked down the street together Mike noticed Bobby had something wrapped in one of his old shirts and asked, “Hey Bobby, what do you have wrapped in your old shirt?”
Bobby just smiled and answered, “Tools.”
Mike not satisfied with such a simple answer wanted to know more and asked, “Tools for what? Come on Bobby spill the beans, what do you have up your sleeve this time?”
Bobby looked at Mike with his adventurous look in his eyes and said, “Today we are going into the old house with the fence around it.”
Mike stopped dead in his tracks and said, “No way man, if we're caught breaking into that house we are going to get into big trouble and you know it.”
As Mike stopped walking Bobby kept going and said, “We ain't going to get caught now come on before the whole town wakes up.”
Mike hesitated for a moment and then ran to catch up with Bobby. There wasn't a doubt in Bobby's mind whether Mike would let him go into the house alone. He knew Mike would give his life for him if needed and he would have done the same for him.
The streets were still quiet as if the neighborhood was still asleep as the boys reached the fence at the old estate. Bobby climbed over first and Mike then handed him the tools wrapped in the shirt and then he climbed over as well. They then made their way around to the side of the house where the grass was tall and would give them cover. There they found a small window at the base of the foundation; it was a window that would take them into the basement of the home. Bobby opened the shirt and disclosed the tools; he had a hammer, a screwdriver, a pair of pliers and a flashlight. He then took the screwdriver and forced it down into the base of the window and was surprised to find the window not locked at all. It was clear to see it had been sealed years ago, but the paint was old and cracked and no longer could hold the seal it once had. Once the window opened Mike held it open while Bobby shined the flashlight inside to have a look around to make sure there was no one there.
Bobby whisper, “The coast is clear, I am going in, then you hand me the flashlight and then I will help you get in too.”
Mike whispered, “I don't know about this Bobby, this is crazy, what if we're caught in there?”
As he was climbing through the window Bobby whispered, “This is no time to chicken out, I told you we ain't going to get caught, now come on.”
With hesitation Mike handed Bobby the flashlight. He then climbed through the open window as well hanging from his fingertips and then dropping to the floor careful to not make any noise. While Mike was climbing through the window Bobby scouted out for the lights. The wirin
