The Man on the Highway

While driving west at seventy
(the fastest I could legally go),
keeping left lest I pass some trucks,
I caught, in my rear-view mirror,
a madman flashing his brights on and off,
his dark brows thrashing in angry arches
The irony struck me. I laughed:
this man would speed but dared not break the law
by passing me on the right lane.
I thought, for greed, about standing my ground,
but highways are no place for holy wars.
I turned my car and gently yielded right.
When I obeyed I glanced at his passing:
disgraced and twisted in anger,
his face mouthed words I could not hear
as he displayed his proudest finger.
I smiled and waved, pitying him,
hoping what caved in his heart could be fixed.

Joseph D.E. Phillips was born in Dearborn, Michigan in 1986. Fascinated with poetry since his youth, he attended the University of Southern Indiana from 2004-2007 studying English with an emphasis on creative writing.
