Daddy was in the Army Reserves. His full time job was a Principal, and he worked at a school with boys and girls. The school building was near our house. Grandma took me to Daddy's school at lunch time. Daddy would let me run in the gym after I ate lunch. I had to hurry because Daddy had work to do with the other boys and girls. Then one day he was called to another country. Now this is his full time job so he will not be at school this year. I was sad and I cried. Later, he said I was his shadow and I would be with him everyday until he left. I helped him pack. He told me everything that he would take. I thought it was a lot of clothes and outside Army tools. I tried to learn about all of that stuff even if I am little. Soon he would be meeting the other Soldiers at his Army building. I hugged and kissed him good-bye. He said he would come back again when time was up. Now he was on his way to that far away country. Daddy writes, and sends pictures. Sometimes he calls me. One day in his letter he said he would be home soon. When the day comes I know I will find Daddy in that big crowd of soldiers waving to me. Flags and banners will be waving too. All the people will sing songs, and the country will be safer we will have our freedom forever. Daddy was a brave soldier and a hero in both countries.

About the Book
MY DADDY, A SOLDIER is a story about an expressive young child as she sees her father suddenly going off to WAR. Her experiences of how she calculates time completely explains the fathers' military and personal gear as he is packing for the long journey. How she processes his skills as a soldier through her thoughts at this tender young age expressing emotions, feelings, fears, and dreams reflecting on the past, present and future. Explaining how she engages in a father, daughter relationship through activities, memories, and pictures that prove to be a tremendous bonding for life even with the separation and until the fathers return.
About the Author
Ruth E. Phelps grew up in New Castle, Indiana and always surrounded by children. She later graduated from Indiana University. Her lifetime career was working with families and children. She is now retired after many years of Social Work, yet now substitute teaches for Elementary age children. She has experienced several years of hosting foreign exchange students, and found this to be challenging. She is a mother and grandmother of one son and granddaughter to whom she dedicates this book. She was inspired to write children's illustrated literature because of her young granddaughter experiencing the transition of her father serving in the military for a second tour of duty in Iraq. While leaving behind his young daughter and watching her emotions and reactions at this time, she was stimulated by observing other children's skills in writing, reading, drawing, as well as other activities in her teaching position.
