Lord, I Keep Running Back to You!

CHAPTER 1                                                MAKE IT RAIN!

“Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.” Hosea 10:12

             My attention was baited by the gentle tapping of raindrops that sporadically beat against my window pane. It was as if God Himself was taking my hand in His, summoning me to sit quietly and listen. My somber mood was soon pricked with these thought-provoking words that could not be ignored nor taken for granted, “Make it Rain!” My mind immediately retreated to times my mother would say, “The Lord moves in mysterious ways.” But even she would have to admit that this was a bit out of the ordinary. Rhetorically I asked, “Lord, are you sure you want me to make it rain?”          

            I sat perched on the windowsill with my eyes transfixed on the delicate dribbles of rain. As far back as I could remember—the mention of rain had always been associated with some sort of problem. I was all too familiar with the commonly used proverb, “When it rains, it pours.” This saying was typically used to signify that when trouble comes it usually brings a few friends along with it. And yet, God was stirring in my spirit to “Make it Rain!” What did He expect me to get out of this?

For a moment, I gazed sullenly at the window with my hands positioned under my chin and elbows resting on my knees. My mind was racing from one meaningless assumption to the next. Before long, I was swept over by a feeling of fatigue. I had no more time to think. I rose slowly to retire from the mad rush of the day. Then suddenly, with speed and weight, the answer hit me like a ton of bricks tumbling from the top of a high-rise building. I gasped and nodded. “That’s it,” I muttered.

It was in my darkest season that God ushered me into His presence. He took something as unpretentious as rain and with it, changed the course of my life in a remarkably positive direction. He pointed out its persistent nature to fall from the sky like beaded, stage curtains being brought down at the end of a performance.
