Chapter 1: Speculation
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). In all four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, only John begins his writings with the words, “In the Beginning;” signifying the beginning of time. The other three gospels simply speak of the life of Christ from the time he is born. Matthew begins his writings with the genealogy of Christ, Mark begins with the beginning of the gospel of Christ and Luke starts by giving his account of Christ’s life with statements from eyewitnesses (from a Gentile’s point of view). Only John sees further back in time in his writings, and what is most interesting is this same John is an eyewitness to the end of time. He gives us his personal account of witnessing the end of time events in the book of Revelation. The reason I make this point of John being associated with the end of time events is because this revelation I discovered in the Book of John possibly concerns the end of time as well.
As long as the Bible has been around many mysteries have gone unsolved. One of these mysteries, a very popular one I might add, is the curiosity of what Jesus wrote on the ground while at the temple near the Mount of Olives in Judea. There have been many speculations concerning Jesus writing on the ground. If I could have a dime for every speculation, educated guess, or opinion concerning this issue, I could retire and still have some to spare. This story takes place in the Gospel of John concerning a woman caught in adultery. She was to be stoned to death according to the Law of Moses. I think it’s safe to say for the most part, we know the moral of the story: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her” (John 8:7). So, who throws a stone at her? No one!
We are all sinners and we all are in need of forgiveness of our sins: “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
The writing on the ground by Jesus has been a topic in the Word of God that has been barely touched, skimmed over or even ignored since the Bible was written. Still today we hear very little about any significance to what Jesus may have wrote, or is there any significance to the subject at all? After all, doesn’t this story tell us enough? We are all sinners, and we all need forgiveness of our sins.
I now suspect there was some significance to His writing on the ground. I also believe it was meant for this generation, our generation, to understand what He was telling us in His act of writing.
