The Catholic Church believes that self-interpretation of the Bible is just not possible, and understands just how really dangerous it can be, going all the way back to the Reformation period itself, yet Fundamentalists have not figured this out for themselves, and it is literally pulling apart the Protestant Church at the seams, causing untold numbers of divisions and dissention. The fact that there exists thousands of small different sects of Protestantism, teaching differing interpretations of the Bible, is living proof that self-interpretation is dangerous and can lead many people astray, and also leads to disunity instead of unity.
When a
Fundamentalist approaches you and begins their accusations, they will normally
try to “sucker-you” into their argument without your ever being aware of what they
are doing. They will prey on the fact that Catholics do believe the Bible is
Gods Holy Word (which it is)
If, however, you do the following one thing that I am going to suggest, you can set up any conversation, any defense of your Catholic faith, any debate or argument with any Fundamentalist, and you will lay the foundation for winning that debate by simply and emphatically holding your Catholic ground at the beginning of any conversation: when a Fundamentalist mentions that the Bible alone has all of the answers, or that the Bible is the only authority ….You need to retort immediately to the Fundamentalist by saying something like this: “Well my friend, I do believe the Bible is God’s Written Word, but I also believe that the Catholic Church has equal authority with the Bible. I do not accept the premise of your argument that the ‘Bible alone’ is the only authority and has all of the answers. And I will be more than happy to discuss Purgatory with you as long as you understand this is where I am coming from”. Once you have said this, if the conversation proceeds any further, the Fundamentalist is now at a great disadvantage because you did not concede to the trap that he set for you, even though for the most part you will be defending yourself using the Bible (which the Fundamentalist will be very surprised at and not expecting you to do), and by also using extra-biblical arguments. You also have Church history on your side, all of which you will need to defeat this untrue accusation and successfully defend your Catholic faith. And defeat this accusation you will! You will

He was born and raised
Catholic until age nineteen, when he was converted to Fundamentalist
Christianity through the twisting and misuse of the Holy Bible by well-meaning Fundamentalists. He spent the next 25 years of his adult life in
Fundamentalist Christianity; much of that time was devoted to ‘bashing’
Catholics and easily converting them to Fundamentalism.
It was the Bible itself, combined with God working through a handful of loving, faithful Protestants, which ultimately led him out of Fundamentalist Christianity. While Robert is eternally grateful for his experience in Fundamentalism, he does have some distinct theological differences with his Fundamentalist brethren, and would like to set the record straight and right some of the wrongs that were done.
Only a former Fundamentalist that knows the gritty details of how to persuade Catholics their faith is all wrong, can develop and teach the counter-methods required to effectively prevent that from happening to other Catholics and their families. Robert Joseph Stevens is that person, and has that ‘know-how’.
