Oh, if Diane had only stuck with her first answer to Beverly when asked to join this little nine-hole league, she could have been enjoying the nice summer sunshine out on the lake, in her convertible, or at a shopping mall. Once again, the persuasive side of Beverly had won over the common sense of Diane, as it had from the first day they met. In spite of the deep down remorse she felt at that very moment for ever considering to have put herself in the public display of ineptitude, she knew that Beverly was the kind of friend who had come into her life at the exact moment she needed her. In the days and months that lay ahead, she would come to realize just how important her need for Beverly’s friendship was and what a major role she would play in her life.

It was a nine-hole ladies league these four women had joined because of the game, and because of their personal agendas. None of them had any idea what was going to await them either on or off the golf course. Beverly and Jill had known each other in college. They were surprised to find each other thirty years later. Both of them had become widows and were struggling to regain purpose, strength and identity. Diane found herself not any longer being needed as a wife and mother. She knew she was at a cross roads in her life, and her friend Beverly told her she should join the golf group. She had never played the game before, but was certain because of her basic athletic ability that she would not have any difficulty picking up the sport. Joanna was a strong, independent woman who commanded the respect of both men and women. She had left the County Prosecution office to start her own law firm. She had aided both Jill and Beverly with cases against the county and the state, bringing victory to both of them. None of them realized on the first day of league play how inextricably their lives would be woven together. None of them knew how deep their friendships would grow.
About the Author
Sandra Spaugh is a Registered Nurse, Licensed Health Facility Administrator and Owner of a Health Care Facility in a small town in central Indiana. She is the mother of two boys and a girl and the grandmother of four boys and two girls. Sandra’s life experiences as a businesswoman, mother and grandmother are many and varied. However, her introduction to the game of golf in her early fifties proved to be an eye-opening experience that led her into numerous personal relationships, some good and some not-so-good, that hold a special place in her memories today. Sandra has drawn upon those experiences and relationships to weave a story that includes some humor from learning the nuances of the game, including the reality that there is much that occurs on the golf course that actually has little to do with the game itself, and builds a mysterious story of intrigue that involves politics, underhanded business tactics and romance.
