GUARD YOUR HEART
What a thing this organ called the heart is
What a fine specimen of God’s creation
For out of it flows the issues of life
For out of it springs rivers of joy and pain
Love and disdain
Life and death
It fuels our emotions
Dictates our actions
Demands satisfaction
Compels reaction
It is no ordinary organ
Just as it pumps blood to the rest of our bodies
It pumps life to our souls
Resuscitates our very beings
A broken one can even lead to death
A word from the wise implores us to guard our hearts
To put a fence around it and choose carefully who we let in through its gates
It is sensitive and easy to break you see
Fragile in its very essence
And yet still a hardened one can be the toughest thing to penetrate
Indeed, what a thing this organ called the heart is
Therefore, guard it well
For out of it flows the issues of life

About the Book
“From The Heart” is a collection of poetry by husband and wife team, Abdalla and Shenille Straker. They write “from their hearts” on a variety of topics and issues that have affected them, and had a significant impact on their lives.
Particularly significant and influential at this point in their lives was the opportunity to see the first black man, Mr. Barack Obama, elected to the become the 44th President of the United States of America. They were both present at the first democratic presidential debate, which took place at the university they attend,
They both maintain strong spiritual and moral ideals, which can be seen expressed in a number of their pieces. “From The Heart” will without a doubt leave you captivated from beginning to end, but more than that, it will speak to your own heart. In a time when men do things with so many unseen agendas, they believe that it is the things done from the heart that have the greatest impact, and resonate loudest in the future.

About the Author
Abdalla and Shenille Straker are a husband and wife team of poets/ spoken word artists who currently reside in Orangeburg, South Carolina. For Abdalla, this is the sixth poetic publication that he has contributed to. In terms of personal work, he has authored two books of poetry before, Letters To The Lord and Overflow. This is Shenille’s first publication.
Both Abdalla and Shenille are currently completing degrees at South Carolina State University, and are heavily involved in the arts and church where they frequently speak and share their talent. Abdalla is also a motivational speaker.
