According to Granny Connor, Coon Creek had a chicken thief.
"You probably didn't count right," Jeremiah told her.
"Weasels are bad this time time of year," her husband Josh suggested.
"Twas a two-legged varmint," Granny insisted. "But a bullet goes into them,too," she threatened as she stomped out of the mercantile.
"Edith mentioned missing a couple of chicks," Doc Tompkins rubbed his whiskers.
"Mayhap them foreigners laying the railroad track took 'em?" Jeremiah suggested.
Josh shook his head. "They ain't gonna wait for them chicks to get to eating size."
"Better calm Granny down," Doc grinned at Josh. "We don't need people getting shot."
In the corner of the mercantile, Seth Harmon, son of the cabinet maker, grinned while debating what he would buy when he started making money. In a box upstairs in his room, he had over a dozen baby chicks. It wasn't his fault they had strayed from the mother hens. Why he'd probably saved them from the weasels.
One good thing about Pa being on crutches from the War, Seth thought. He never made it upstairs so Seth's chicken business was safe. Another good thing, Pa would always be too busy to ask questions when Seth brought them outside when they got bigger.

About the Book
Jeremiah Barrows had his vision of a perfect communty in East Central Indiana where people helped and respected each other. Josh Connor and his wife Granny wanted a place to work and acceptance for their deaf mute son. His in-laws sent former actor Ezra Tucker with Barrows to hearing about his womanizing scandals. Brother Samuels shouldered the responsibility this new flock through the Pearly Gates.
But the townsmen were not the only ones with vision in the 1870's and 80's. Dorcas Tucker and one of her daughters worked to improve the status of women. Pete Higgins fought for respect toward his family of farmers. Young Seth Harmon saw power and money in his future while his farmer contemporary Abe Dawson wanted to inspire others.
Another light-hearted exploration of Indiana, its people and problems by the the author of From the Cornfield Ghetto, a collection of short stories and novellas published in 2006.
