Celibacy
No major difference in celibacy requirements between the two groups was found. If those included in this study are representative of most clergy, celibacy does not appear to play the role in sexual abuse as is often thought. Approximately 30 percent of clergy pedophiles were required to remain celibate, as was discussed in the marriage history section.
Many professionals and religious leaders believe that it is the definitive characteristic leading to an inability to form close and healthy relationships. It may not be the restriction from intimacy in and of itself that plays such a crucial role, but the inability and/or unwillingness to form intimacy secondary to the significant characteristics being discussed here.
Impulsiveness
Impulsiveness does not appear to be descriptive of clergy pedophiles, as no major difference between the clergy pedophile and non-pedophile groups was found. Neither group showed major difficulties with impulsivity. The literature review included the belief by some that clergy pedophiles abuse because of uncontrollable, errant impulses that are by nature accidental. As this group does not appear to have marked problems with impulsivity, looking toward other factors contributing to their abusive actions may be warranted.
As most from the clergy pedophile group experienced thoughts and acted on them prior to their introduction to the religious field, it is not likely that pedophilic actions are sole reactions to isolated mood states.
The discussion about alcohol and drugs also supports the findings here, as they don't show a tendency to use substances to lower inhibitions, increase their level of impulsivity, and self medicate.
Dependency
Emotional dependency does appear to be highly descriptive of clergy pedophiles, as a much higher representation of dependency needs occurred in the pedophile group as compared to the other. Virtually 100 percent were assessed and treated for emotional dependency issues.
Although over 50 percent of non-pedophile clergy were also diagnosed with significant dependency needs, the difference suggests it is much more of an issue for the abusers. This supports the views that clergy pedophiles turn to youth in part because they are much safer and less likely to turn them down.
It may also suggest that they enter into their religious vocation so that they don't have to take responsibility or control. They can put themselves in God's capable, all knowing hands, as it might feel natural to view God as in control and the best source of identification for them.
Their actions, historically, have been sheltered and dealt with incompletely and indirectly, again attractive to a dependent individual. Dependent people seek others to take care of them, and the religious arena has appeared to often provide the role of caretaker. This has occurred, for example, by clergy pedophiles allowing superiors to relocate them rather than address the issue more directly.

About the Book
Clergy Pedophiles is, first and foremost, a study intent on discerning characteristics specifically descriptive of clergy who sexually abuse minors. Its descriptions, interpretations, and suggestions originate from the careful study and analysis of files containing the background, intervention, and treatment records of religious figures who had voluntarily entered into an inpatient psychiatric program at the direct request or demand of a supervisor. The author's intent in the release of his findings is to increase the understanding of clergy pedophilia and aid in the recovery of its victims. If this release should foster positive change of any kind, then the effort will have been worthwhile.
About the Author
Dr. Freiburger received his Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater; his Master's degree in Marital and Family Counseling and his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, IL.
He has owned, directed, and provided service for Allied Counseling Services, a Wisconsin corporation, for many years. He remains active in professional and patient education, regularly providing in-services, workshops, and seminars. His clinical work extends to children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly in multiple settings - including outpatient, inpatient/hospital, residential, educational, rehabilitative, nursing, assisted living, shelter, and community. He has also worked extensively with survivors and perpetrators, those who treat them, and their families for many years.
In addition to licensure as a psychologist, he is also certified as an AODA counselor, and holds a Diplomate of the Board in Clinical Forensic Counseling. He provides expert witness evaluation and testimony, consultation, and supervision services. His forensic, consulting, and therapeutic work extends to religious and victim organizations and individuals.
