A knock came from the room next door, and Shelly's muffled voice asked, "What are you doing in there?" The girls knew there was no way they could keep another slam to the floor quiet. So they tried their best, through a thick wall of lumber and sheetrock, to explain about the coconut. Within seconds, Shelly and her roommates were standing outside their door. Shelly was a tall, pretty blonde, and she was bubbly and fun. She was rooming with Carolyn Summers, Judy Billings, and Candice Cain, whom everyone called Candy Cain.
After several more slams to the floor, Carolyn suggested a hammer. She had seen one on the bus behind the driver's seat. All the girls agreed it would probably work, but who was going to try to get on the bus without being seen. They were supposed to be in their rooms.
Belinda, being the daredevil she was, volunteered, and Judy said she would go along as lookout. Belinda slowly opened the door and looked all around. It was totally quiet. She stepped out into the night with Judy right behind her. They had both forgotten they were in their pajamas, until they turned the corner and the cool, night air hit their bare legs. They walked quickly, but quietly, to the end of the motel, checking every direction in case someone came out of a room. They headed straight for the bus. Belinda tried prying the door open by forcing her fingers through the rubber seal on the door. Judy kept glancing around in case someone should walk up. "I can't pry it open by myself. Give me a hand." Judy was slightly shorter than Belinda, so she bent over and placed her hands exactly the same. "Now pull!" exclaimed Belinda, trying to be quiet, but not succeeding.
"What are you two doing?" a gruff, male voice asked from behind them.
Belinda's heart started pounding. "We're in trouble now," she whispered to Judy. Fearing Mr. Hanks or one of the chaperones was directly behind them, the two girls slowly turned. Standing there, grinning from ear to ear, were Randy, Jim, and Robbie. "You scared us to death!" Belinda hissed. The girls didn't know and didn't care what the guys were doing out of their room. They assumed they were doing something they shouldn't. Just like they were! And since they were there, maybe they would lend a hand. Belinda explained about the coconut, and after the guys stopped laughing, they stepped up to the bus, placed their bodies against the door, and pushed one side while pulling the other. The door popped open. Inside Randy reached underneath the seat and retrieved the hammer. The group cautiously walked back to the room. "Since we helped, we want some of the coconut," Randy said. Of course, Belinda should have refused, guys weren't supposed to be in the girls' rooms. But sensing excitement, she couldn't resist.
