Deanna knew a fire-fight was imminent. She could feel it in her gut.
Consequently, she got to the bridge early at about 11:00 PM. Only about fifty feet long, the rusty old structure offered little cover.
Deanna carried a fully-loaded Springfield XD-45 in her shoulder holster. She also wore a Smith & Wesson J-frame on her right ankle.
As she began to cross the bridge, two shots rang out from the creek bank on her left side. They were probably .45 slugs by the sound and muzzle flash she observed.
Another three rounds from a smaller weapon, probably a 9-mm, came from the darkness on her right side.
Deanna returned fire with her Springfield, focusing on the muzzle flashes. She couldn't actually see her adversaries in the brush and darkness.
Once the Springfield was empty, Deanna didn't even bother with a tactical reload. She felt onto her back, using one of the bridge beams for cover. Deanna drew the .38 from its ankle holster and took a deep breath. She quickly rose to a crouch and started back to her car.
However, three shots rang out from the 9 mm, striking her in the chest. Deanna flipped over the bridge railing and plungled into the black water below. And then...darkness.

About the Book
Private Investigator, Deanna Kim, is in some ways like a fish out of water.
She is the only daughter of General Kim, who immigrated to America following the coup in 1969. His reputation as a fierce martial artist has carried over to Deanna.
Deanna in some ways resembles the actress, Lucy Lu, in appearance. However, Deanna has issues of depression and alcholism, which she continually battles. Neither one is conducive to any investigator, who carries numerous large-caliber firearms, as Deanna does.
If she's not careful, this case could be her last. Deanna is hot on the trail of a Hispanic syndicate, which has stolen a potent mind-altering drug, similar to LSD. Eventually, the bad guys mark her for death, using the drug as their weapon of choice.
Will Deanna twart their efforts or end up as just another washed-out junkie?
About the Author
Pauly Mihalak and his wife of twenty years, Janet, live in suburban Hubbard, Ohio. Their boxer dogs, Jackie and Marmaduke, round out their current family.
Pauly and Janet also have five grown foster daughters and six grandsons.
Before retiring to write full-time, Pauly was an automotive insurance investigator for twenty-one years. He also freelances for various Christian and secular magazines.
