About the Author

My name is Carmen Maria Navarro-Talavera and I was born in Somoto, Nicaragua. My interest on writing children's books stared when I was a rural teacher in the mountains of Nicaragua and had no books in my classroom. It is here when I began writing books using simple elements like craft paper, newspapers, magazines, insects, leafs, etc. Another very important factor to write Lucy and the Hurricane its my experience with this natural disaster by living here in Florida. As an educator, I have seen the need to inform and educate our parents and children in a fun way by making reading a family activity not only for a learning moment, but to reassure our children that everything is going to be OK, as long we are well prepared and have one another love and support. Since I was a little girl, I have a great curiosity and admiration for the tedious work insects do, especially ants. I was intrigue by their fascinating and well organize world, their communication and behavior that reminded me the behavior of our families and our society. It is why I could not found a better character for this story than an ant. Lucy the ant was my inspiration to write my first children's book. Finally the day has arrived! and today I want to present to you my first children's book. I hope with Lucy and the Hurricane you have a fun and learning time as family and in your classrooms when you are reading it, doing the homework, writing your list, going to the store, and why not becoming "actors and actresses" in you living room and classroom playing with your children, students, grandchildren and friends the reader's theater. Camera, Action!
