About the Author
Alonza Knowles is an ex-professional boxer. He fought two world champions. He fought Riddick Bowe, the former Heavyweight Champion of the world, in his first amateur bout. He also fought Inamu Mayfield, former Junior Heavyweight Champion, in his last professional fight.
He starred in his own play "Young Pugilist" Off-Broadway at Playwright Horizons in Manhattan of New York City. His play is about an ex-professional boxer who uses his younger brother as a surrogate and his mother is fighting to hold onto her younger son for fear of his life.
Mr. Knowles studied playwriting with Broadway/Off-Broadway director Gene Frankel [The Blacks with James Earl Jones, Maya Angelou, Cicely Tyson, Roscoe Lee Brown, and Louis Gossett Jr.], playwright Charles Fuller [A Soldier’s Play, A Soldier’s Story], and Joseph Popp Young Playwright Festival during high school in 1984.
He did the boxing stunts for rock singer Wild Child’s music video.
Alonza made his professional debut on E.S.P.N. after proclaiming as a playwright he was going to make his professional debut on the Donohue Show with Mohammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, and Larry Holmes.
Maybe you have seen Mr. Knowles in several international newspapers. He fought Olympic-style boxing in both Europe and Scandinavia. He has fought champions from both Norway and France.
In 1979 he was the Pope John Paul II’s guest at the Vatican and had dinner with Cardinal Cooke at St. Patrick Cathedral in New York City.
Alonza is not a Catholic but he is a Christian artist who enjoys interceding for the world affairs.
