FROM : (TALES OF THE OLD WEST)
“Say, Beary, your cousin, Wyatt Bearb -- Did you hear?
He became sheriff of Tombstone this year.”
“Really, how did Cousin Wyatt decide to become
the sheriff of Tombstone? That seems kind of dumb.”
“They offered the sheriff’s job to Wyatt,
so he thought about it though -- ‘Why not try it.’
They heard he was really quick on the draw
and that might help the town keep the law.”
“A quick draw? Yes, that’s true.
In seconds, he could draw a portrait of you.”
“Hah, an artist,--- not a gun fighter? That explains the tale
about how he put Billy The Kid in jail.
You’ve heard about Billy The Kid, I trust.
He rode into town on a cloud of dust.
That in itself was quite unusual, of course,
most of us would ride into town on a horse.
Billy was causing trouble in the saloon that night.
They called Sheriff Wyatt to stop the fight.
Wyatt lumbered in ‘till the gunman he faced,
then he grabbed Bill around the waist.
Wyatt held him in a bear hug so tight,
Billy passed out and woke up in jail that night.”
“That sounds like Wyatt – Always some trick.
What happened to the old sheriff, did he get sick?”
“He got arthritis real bad, so they let him go.
He was all bent over and had to walk real slow.
He couldn’t straighten up and looked sort of weird.
So they fired him, because the whole town feared
that word would start spreading around
that they had a crooked sheriff in town.”
