Which has the most vitality in your mind, the memories of the past or the dreams of the future?
So often, when I'm pondering over subjects to discuss, especially when I'm sick and tired of writing politics, I come upon visions of times past. So many things I remember from the past seem to have a special priority across the events that make up a person's story. Is it that in our memory we can't remember the sharpness of pain, the pungency of smell, the dejectedness of sorrow or the weariness of body? Possibly, it is that in our memories we magnify the highlights of a happening and minimize low-lights.
I'm going to tell you a story, a story retrieved out of the memories of my heart and mind. It will begin in the innocence of youth, that period when in a young man's life when the pricks of thorns teach suspicion, the commitment of friendship teach trust and the thrill of laughter teach confidence. It will be this period that we will recognize the cultivation of spirit and personality that we each will look back at in our own circumstance and vainly try to understand ourselves, our fears, our secret pains, our low esteem. It is here, in these years of adolescence, not even understanding at the time, that a happening is happening in our lives that will plant the seeds and begin the momentum that is nothing less than the foundation that all of our impulses and meta-motivations will originate. Those strange influences, buried deeply in the recesses of our psyche, that our sub-conscience uses to evaluate and justify every action and reaction, every right, every wrong, every hate, every love from that early time until the time the circuitry discontinues. These are the times and places that Freud dared to trespass.
I want to tell you a story of a boy trying to understand love, hate, joy, sorrow. How a young man dealt with them.
A story of passionate love, of fiery hatred, the devils Satan. It begins in the life of a boy beginning his teens.

The drama of this book evolves as Bud finds friends that are willing to help him find meaning and security in relations outside of the home structure. Beginning with “Ole Blue” a worn and tattered old Blue tic hound, his older Friday night friends and mentors, Amy, his first romance and truly trusted friend, to Dawn and a little dark skinned boy who would remain his lifetime companions.
Rollicking fun, heart wrenching pain and eternal meaning are wrapped up in this story, laced with life values and strong feelings, all entwined to make a story that grabs you on the first page and will not turn loose long after the the book is resting on the shelf..
This is a novel – not a true story – but the place is real – the story is almost true – the characters are almost real.
A must read for every teenager, boy or girl. A should read for every adult.
About the Author
Okay, I was a broken home kid. If you find my writing slanted toward that sympathy it's
for reason. However, broken home certainly doesn't predispose any particular stereotype.
Show me a kid from a broken home and I'll show you a kid who has developed unique survival skills and a curious independence. That was me. Independent-curious-energetic, living with Mom my first years and then my Dad, constantly running away from one home to the other – doing pretty much whatever I thought I was big enough to handle.
Those are the years when I developed the feelings and emotions to write this book.
From those early years I went on to develop professional skills for a career – beyond that I developed skills in writing, photography – both above and below water, skiing (both kinds), scuba, fishing, hunting, hiking, horse packing, caving and exploration.
I live with my wife Dona on our Silver City, New Mexico paradise – seven grown kids – fourteen grandkids.
